When I joined NLS, I was ecstatic as I, along with a good friend of mine had together made it to one of the most prestigious law schools of the country. As time passed by, our bonding grew and we became even better friends. In the mean time, I had made some very two good friends in my batch, and I made a joint whatsapp group of the four of us, and introduced them to each other, who were previously total strangers to each other. We chatted a lot on our Whatsapp group, and I became highly attached to all three of them. But when offline college opened, I got to know that they had now created their own separate group, in which they used to bitch about me. After seeing those chats and hearing from a few other friends that they call me a weirdo and all sorts of things, I have started falling in depression because I really loved and cared for them. Even after investing more than 1.5 years on this relationship, I have failed in the quest of making good friends. This has made me fall in depression with a heavy feeling of worthlessness, and with thoughts of even dropping out. Please suggest ways to handle and cope with this situation.

Reality bites .The reality of virtually known to someone and actually finding him later in person may differ .Most of out friendships and even any form of relationships depend on how good we are feeling with them over a time and this equation may keep on changing with the new social dynamics. Hope very soon you will able to find out some other good friends .Moreover remember that your deeper being is your true companion .Keep enjoying games and other activities there .

Please seek professional help. Counselling will do wonders if you allow it. Does NLS have in campus counsellors? They are professionals who know how to tackle these issues. Depression is not something that internet can solve.

You are not the only one facing this. I guess many of us witnessed this after moving from online to offline medium. Many of those whom I considered 'close' turned out to be completely different. However, I am fortunate enough that 3 of them are pure gems. Moreover, a person whom I did not even know existed in my batch became one of the 4 closest friends I ever made. Whatever happening with you is completely understandable. One important thing, if you really feel that they are not worth your friendship, PLS PLS PLS try to stay away from them. Hope you too find some fantastic friends soon. Be strong.

Reality can often be disappointing my friend but you need to pull yourself back together. You will find many more friends and you don't need multiple friends. Just one who genuinely cares about you will do. So, don't feel bad about yourself and just be you. Everything else with time will fall in place.

The thought of dropping out is actually a very worrying sign for you. See, you must be knowing about my toxic batch, GNLU-24 (check previous LI threads) and the toxicity and back-bitching has reached such an extent that it has become very suffocating and difficult to survive. All this happened because of a few, rotten apples in our batch. the Toxicity has reached such an extent that almost every person can be seen back-bitching and biting about others. People however when the college reopened in March and April started hanging out with the same kinds of people who were back-biting them, because of two reasons. Firstly, they did not have the courage or patience to stay alone and survive in college. and secondly, they did not want to show that they had fights with them during the pandemic, so that they could post "happy-looking" pictures in Instagram, to show off to others that their life was settled.
most of the people in groups are pretending to like each other, even though deep inside they are full of ego.
INSPITE of all this, none of the students have dropped out of college and are surviving. So, my advice to you would be to stay put in NLS, learn to live alone importantly, and have the courage to do things along and not depend on your selfish friends.

No, you will survive and even thrive. It hurts and it's painful. Those are completely valid feelings but these three people must not derail you for achieving an education. I know emotions are running high, but when you think about it, you will understand this is a fleeting thought.
Have hobbies and work on yourself. Humans are the worst. They use you and them dump you, and along the way you'll find someone who is worth your time.

They do not seem like good people.

As someone who was in your position in law school I just have one thing to say. The best revenge is just being happy without them.

This is of course easier said than done.

If you're feeling depressed to the point that you are finding it difficult to function I would recommend that you get help. Bangalore has no shortage of resources you can use. Just walk into a Nimhans. Get treatment. It could involve a short course of treatment, it could mean therapy. Work on yourself and realise that your self worth is not dependant on the acceptance of others.

Of course it will hurt to find the people you are close to don't feel the same way back. But this is just a minor setback. You have a long life to live and will meet many more interesting and nice people who will value you for what you bring to the table. More importantly you got a lot of shit to do while in law school. You need to focus on that.

There are plenty of good people among the seniors and the juniors. Try to get involved in campus activities. One thing I realised I really enjoyed was spending time outside the campus in my final two years. Try to join activities with like minded people. Learn a language or an instrument. Make time for yourself outside law school.

It is very easy to imagine that law school is the world. It really isn't. There is a lot of stuff happening outside.

If things are feeling out of hand. Talk to someone you trust immediately. Don't let it fester inside. Call home. Reconnect with old friends from school if you have to. Don't worry things will get better.

It’s not about them - it’s about you and your approach to life. Please focus on yourself, your fitness, your studies and your needs. Joke around, stay in touch with people (including the people who bitch behind your back), make plans and take leads in college events, spend time in library - do research or help people out, do what makes ^you^ happy. Take things like back biting, bitching behind backs in stride and learn to ignore them. This are short term games and people will forget in times to come.

Life is not a zero sum game, and it’s not a short term game either. You please play a long term game - where you have character, integrity, honesty and values. Don’t engage in this shit, offline college offers you so many opportunities to make friends in events and conferences, and Bengaluru in general is a gem of a city. Please keep in touch with people, ignore the noise and - never forget it’s about you!

So much to do, so many people to meet, you study in the best university in the country and have so much to offer to aspirants, to other law schools, to community - if you care about three people (who happen to be young and misguided about priorities in life), that’s just doing yourself and the world some sort of injustice.

Please find solace in books, please create a space for values in life, and please go out and meet with people. You will find we live in a lonely world, and friendship more often than not is appreciated a lot :)
