- 41 seats reserved for national SC/ST/OBC
- 41 reserves for Tamil Nadu SC/ST/OBC/BC Muslim/BC non-Muslim/MBC
- 19 seats reserved for Tamil Nadu domicile unreserved category
- 2 seats reserved for Kashmiri Migrants and Kashmiri Hindus
- 17 seats reserved for national merit seats

So if I am a non-Tamil Brahmin/Khastriya/Vaishya Hindu/Muslim/Sikh/Parsi/Jain/Christian then I can only aim for 19 out of 120 seats. What kind of a cruel joke is this?

Wait till you find out you will go straight to the bottom of the social hierarchy abroad and face discrimination that you never do in India as an upper caste, e.g. being told 'You should not buy a house here because people like you do not live here'

Call those seats what they are. Reserved and for savarna students who can afford thousands if not lakhs in CLAT coaching. Merit has got nothing to do with it. I speak as a savarna student myself, who never had to begrudge or blame reservation for 'taking away opportunities' from him. Those who do blame thus, are actually not 'meritorious' enough by that same metric of merit.

I am a so called savarna student. My English is not very good. Father works in a private company and makes 20'000 per month. Ma is a homemaker. We look after our grandparents. We have loans. I have another sister and brother.

I got into lower NLusw(2000s rank) I prepared for CLAT on my own without coaching - I struggled and studied english and legal with youtube channel and telegram apps for free mock test. Unlike most of you - I studied in a Government school.

- but couldn't afford the fees to go to lower nlu. I would have struggled and taken a loan if I got into top nlu where the chances of getting any job are higher.

I am not poor.

But I couldn't afford clat coaching and fees for lower nlu.

Richer students with schedule caste reservation get fee reduction and also seat reservation.

My fathers company owners (rich owners) are in obc caste. His daughter get into medical college.

But my privileged savarna sister? She is studying for ba course as we didn't have money. Her doctor dreams are shattered. We can't afford. But we are privileged. Atleast I can study llb. My sister can never study medicine.

But me? I am privileged. I am savarna I can afford any fees and I can get into any seats. I am garbage.

This is what I hate about upper caste friends who behave godly.

You are rich my friend. But majority of your own community will be poor. Despite being savarna. Get out of your flat and see poor savarna.

After my llb I cannot even work as advocate (no salary) as I need to work for wages to pay back my sisetrs marriage loans.

Every party rejected us because we do not have population strength. Reservation only going up - used by wealthy members of OBC and sc caste.

After seeing this post - I wish I go out of India but no money for that.

Actually, all your assumptions about my economic background are wrong. My father was not rich. I come from a lower middle class family. Studied in a vernacular medium government school. Did not take any CLAT coaching. Studied by myself. Got through to a 'top NLU'. Took an education loan. Graduated with a single digit batch rank and joined a 'top tier' law firm for two years to pay off the loan. Then did my LLM from abroad on full scholarship. Currently working with a policy body abroad and loving what I do for a living. Those of you who consider themselves 'more meritorious' than reserved category students are really not so. Reservation wouldn't have been necessary had not your own community, religion and society made the distinction between castes. Since they do, therefore you need to be 'more meritorious' compared to people from your own community instead of blaming others for taking away your chances. Or force the government to create enough positions so that everyone who wants to study at a good place can do so. All this hatred expressed here against reservation actually emphasises why it is necessary.

Dear Savarna brother, I feel for you and your problems. But you see, by the same logic applied by the geniuses here, you are not 'meritorious' enough! That's why the notion of merit is flawed. Only people who have received equal opportunities in life can be compared for their outcomes.

Let's be thankful that at least 17 out of 120 seats are unreserved. In the future 100% seats will be reserved. thanks to our system of vote bank politics. But as comment 6 says it is best to leave India and go abroad. The West is a truly meritocratic society and that is why the West is so successful.

More than caste based quotas, I'm worried about domicile quotas. Reserving so many domicile seats defeats any chance of diversity.

Yes, I get that TN taxpayers might be funding TNNLU. But TN students who go on to study at TNNLU would benefit more from interacting with non-TN notions than from slightly subsidized education.

Time to stop all reservation based on caste and community and instead simply reserve 10 to 20% of seats on the basis of economic criteria only. A Brahmin/Kshatriya/Vaishya child of a lower-level government clerk, or of an army officer martyred at a young age, must have the greater right over the child of an SC/ST/OBC IAS or IPS officer. This is simple common sense. Only in this way can Indian institutions become truly world-class.

If you think reservations are what prohibits institutions from being world-class, think again: 43% of Harvard admits are not on merit basis [1]. And no, I am not talking of 'affirmative action' but rather privileged white admissions through legacy or economic deals.

Anyways most of the north Indian people, who come to TNNLU, are Andh Bhakts. I remember, when I was in my 2nd year, a classmate of mine from a BIMARU state said that Sanskrit should be made the national language of the country, and that everyone should speak in Sanskrit and not in English. Maybe state reservations in TN will decrease the likelihood of our state being dominated by ideologies of my classmate above.

I'm not surprised by the classist attitude displayed Not condoning what your batchmate said here, but you calling other states BIMARU shows your classist mentality. But again I am not surprised, people from these states have been routinely mocked in the South, particularly in Tamil Nadu which is known for its jingoism and linguistic chauvinism.

Aren't people from Tamil Nadu too zealous about their language? Yes, linguistic chauvinism it is. In your beloved Tamil Nadu. Anddd, no I haven't learnt these words just 'from' somewhere. These words clearly and categorically define what some people in the state value. Also, unlike you who was very to quick to paint all North Indians with the same brush, call them names I was careful enough state 'some' people. Most regular people be it in South or North couldn't care less about petty rivalries that people like you keep propping. Peace out.
