Presently an A0 in a white collar crimes team where the substantial part of the team's work is on diluted internal investigations and co-ordination with external counsels for everything else.
Is this the norm? Will I never set foot in a trial court or do trial work? Have I boxed myself in as an eternal paper pusher?
How did you join without basic due diligence? White collar crime teams come in both flavours, internal investigations and white collar litigation. You have to pick your team accordingly. And in any case, you wanted to not be a paper pusher, so you joined a... law firm?? Maybe you need a few more years in law school to get some basic facts down lol.
Uncle spoke with Senior Partner and I got this gig. Sounded the most exciting of all practice areas. Other than that, I had no clue. Ideally, I wanted to start a business. Joined law firm because it is cool to say in societal circles that I do criminal trial in sophisticated crimes. If this suck continues, I still might. And why are you soo condescending?
Because you are taking the position of someone who actually might like pushing paper as well as have the knack and merit for it, you entitled fool. Talking about societal circles, goddamn, get a hold of yourself.
Someone will always be better and more qualified for everything that I wish to do. That's hardly a reason for not trying what I want to do. I'm sorry that you feel this way but I'm not sorry for trying this thing. Especially when considering all that I personally witness - particularly the in-family nepotism in the firm top partnership. For all the low-bent ass-kissing that the SAs and PAs do in reality, you all ride around on a mighty high virtual horse here.
Not only did you not get your job through merit, you are dumb enough to publicise it. But what makes me laugh is the fact that you had not done some basic research on what you will finally get before pulling the strings to get it! My goodness.
Actually it's not just dumb. It selfish AF. You are like the person who buys toilet paper in bulk at the start of the pandemic and then saying "hmmm. Not the kind of 4 ply toilet paper i thought it was. Oopsie Daisy!"
Please quit. I expect your partner and your entire team to be thrilled
hi OP, this is unrelated but I am interested in being part of a good WCC team. Can you give me tips regarding scoring and performing in internships, professional life etc?
Hi! Sorry. Best I be honest about this. I got this through family connections. Uncle's institution is a major PE client and enabler for the firm and he asked the Senior Partner to entertain me. I neither did any internships nor scored high. I am anyways planning to quit this soon since I'm more interested in business. I dont have the interest or drive to be in this environment. I joined WCC of all teams because I thought it might be cool in societal circles. Best wishes to you to achieve your desires. If I may point out one thing though which most students miss, its to network aggressively. Do that, would you. You can.
bhai network ke baare mein tu toh na hi bol. Approach se naukri mili hai. bada aaya sikhane dusro ko. Kitna network tune kara hoga I can very well imagine. Accept that it was served to you in a golden platter. SMH
None, though all tier 1 firms claim that they are the best or have leading WCC practise. None of the law firms conduct trial on their own. They all engage external lawyers for that. Law Firms collate documents, act an an intermediary between the client and the external lawyer and do some drafting work. Mostly, the drafting done by such law firms in criminal trials is almost similar to civil cases, without understanding that criminal trial is a different ball game, and mostly you don't need a bail application etc., of 1000 pages, detailing everything under the sun including possible defences.
If you wanna get "in business" why not join the corp team or something more related to whatever industry you plan to join? Or perhaps you are joining this business simply for the societal circles as well lmao. You took something from someone by squandering an undeserved opportunity, think about that and about the paths that lay forward before acting on another impulse of yours.
