Your SA was absolutely correct. You see there are a few mistakes your SA made, and principally, two of them - one, to join a law firm, regardless if its a T1 or not, and second, to choose to continue there. Working at a law firm does not affect your skill sets at all - they remain stagnant, and you end up in an endless loop of doing the same work again and again. To choose to continue there - where you have to ask for leaves, have people to report to, be in a desk job, call yourself an "employee", doing a "job" after having done a professional course is nothing but sheer stupidity. Law is a very difficult profession, and the saying goes correctly - law is a jealous mistress. You make choices in life on the basis of the situation you are in. Say, you got really bad CLAT rank and have to choose between a T3 NLU or a private law college. You take a call on the basis of the situation you are in. The SA here made the mistake most bright people do - to work in a law firm knowing fully well that their career would stagnate in 10 years. They'll either be thrown out or continue to do the same thing again and again. Do litigation, you'll only face issues w money in the first few years, but thereafter the sky is the limit - you will be in a profession, you will be your own boss, and can charge as much as you want and work whenever you want while actually applying your mind.

No matter the crap that others are saying an SA will not fake this to an intern because the intern is not his competitor.If SA has said this to A3 I would think it's not legit because he fears the A3 beating his ranks.In front of intern the SA breakdown looks to be real and the SA is right. Run away before you get trapped in this "legal" industry forever.Look for an inhouse job but law firms these days are a freaking exploitative sweat shop especially the Tier1s.

The sad truth is that the profession is extremely demanding. Very difficult to achieve both high growth and work life balance. Those who are in it with no option of exit after a certain age, will make peace by justifying the pain with the money. But unlike 15 years back there are multiple career options out there today which pay similar or better money than being a lawyer in a law firm with way more focus on work life balance. Engineering grads from good colleges are making same or better money than their batchmates who did law. Plus the possibility of becoming an entrepreneur in other professions is way higher than in the world of lala run law firms. For those thinking of getting in - unless you're enamoured with the idea of being a lawyer, think hard before choosing a law school.

Agree with the above comment. I had an SA who did the same rona dhona in front of me and said that I am junior and that I should leave only to be promoted as a PA and still in the same firm and eyeing partnership. He was just eliminating competition because I was just one level junior to him and in the hindsight I think he was threatened that I would make a PA before him if I stayed because the partner was very impressed with me. I left because the team was messy and toxic as hell.

Oh they all say that and next thing you know they are a smug partner. One Senior gave me lots of gyan about how much she hated her firm when I was an intern and scared me off. Three years later I join this firm and this chick is still there now giving gyan about how only survivors who stick it through make it in the firm. They are all moody, and this is unprofessional behaviour. Ignore them and focus on your own experiences and goals.

I am an intern at a tier-1 law firm in Mumbai. One day I was called to my SA’s desk for work but he quite literally broke down. He suggested me to leave law and said that he couldn’t do it but I should not do to my life what he did to his. He said he was stuck there and there was no way out. He said that law was the biggest mistake of his life and I should not make the same mistake unless I actually enjoy every one minute of my work and am okay with having no relationships left in life. He said if I want the job I can have it but then my job would be my life and if I have any expectations out of the scope of this job I will repent taking the job forever. I could legit see tears accumulated in his eyes.

He sent me back with no work. I don’t want to work here anymore. I don’t want to work in law firms anymore. Is it true? When you’re in a law firm, the law firm ought to be your life and there’s no space for anything else left?
