How hard is it to send 500 replies stating that the student doesn't fit the criteria? There is sufficient cheap software for this.
As to the prestigious moot/ publication etc, they could have specific options to choose from, for those moots/ publications etc. the firm deems prestigious. This is not that costly a software. Now with AI ( Im sure you couldn't fathom this 1 yr back), this could be easily simplified with needing minimum personal and fractional costs
Consider jobs - Just add up the fifth year students of all NLUs + Jindal + Christ + Symbi + ILS + Nirma + Amity etc. I'm excluding TLCs for now. That itself is 5000+. Even if half these people apply say to a Khaitan - that's 2500 CVs when the vacancies may be 20 slots (after PPOs).
Note: I'm excluding those who apply after one year experience (say they work with a senior counsel but hate it and want money). But that is easily another 200-300.
Conservatively, that's 1 out of every 100 CVs getting jobs.
It's simply not viable for HR to go thru it. You need an army of people. And most law firms don't see the commercial rationale for investing in that kind of HR costs.
Its physically impossible to check each CV and assess who is exaggerating, who's publication is worthwhile, which moot win is actually prestigious, which committee is actually a group of people that does some work, is this publication actually on a journal or some sham blog.... Most CVs are super inflated with random bullet points and impossible to filter. Esp for HR who haven't been to lawschools themselves. If they present 10 CVs to a partner for a single vacancy, the partner physically does not have 5 hours in a week to conduct 10 30-min interviews. So the HR will be told to filter the top 5 or something.
In this deluge of CVs, the HR uses "shortcuts" like NLU-D v Nirma - they'd consider the NLU-D guy with a similar CV. The metric is that the smarter and more enterprising of the two would have preferred NLU-D over Nirma, 4 years back... The Nirma guy may be better than the NLU D guy, but the NLU D guy is a "safer bet" going by past stereotypes of NLU-D students... Its like buying shares of Reliance versus investing in Crypto.
In all this, the Nirma guy will crib on it on Legally India. 45 other TLC kids will upvote and shame Tier 1 firms.
The system is unfair but right now, it is the only workable system.
Take for instance, in a seperate thread posted a couple of days earlier, a lot of students had called out the CRA for selecting the pcra students of GNLu-24 batch from their friend circle n contacts
