Unfortunate that blind resentment is leading people to criticise some excellent judges who have become judges solely because of merit and hard work. Justice Chandrachud has a doctorate from Harvard and deserves to be CJI regardless of his background and would have become CJI even if he wasn't from a legal family, as he is a brilliant legal mind.

In India people are stupid enough to go and do LLM thinking that brand name of a tier 1 NLU will help them. When they enter the NLU they find that no one gives a damn about the post grad course. Except obviously if you want to enter academics there will be no value addition of this course to your corp career.

Among the Cal HC judges, Justice Ravi Kapur's father SK Kapur is a very famous barrister in Cal HC. Someone mention that the NLSIU alum Shekhar Saraf's father was also a judge. I do not know about the rest though. I However, I think Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya (who did her LLM from Cambridge on a Commonwealth scholarship) is a very nice lady who gives lectures for young students on YouTube. Justice Mantha (who has an LLM from KCL) is also a nice person and does that too. As far as I know they are both not from legal families, but not sure.

Because it isn't close to being world class. It excels as an institution only on the national level. And that too only in terms of the experience it is able to provide to its under-grads. Grad students at NLS, and all other NLUs are neither coming in with a great deal of potential, nor are they going out with much value addition.

I think this is an interesting issue to discuss because it is very rare for Indian judges to study overseas. Most of them are graduates of traditional law colleges. The bigger question to ask is this: Does foreign education help these judges give better quality judgements? For example, greater reference to foreign case law, or expertise in the field in which they did their LLM? The second question is true for Justice Chandrachud and Justice Pratibha Singh, I guess?

Another question to ask is whether an LLM abroad improves an advocate's chances of being selected as a HC judge. For example, if one has a specialist LLM from New York or London in international taxation or IP, or a big brand Oxbridge-Ivy League LLM.
