If I don't make it to a top NLU, does that mean that my chances of getting a good job or higher education are over and I'll have to settle for something which would be less that what kids from top NLUs will get?

With that attitude, yes.

If you stop comparing yourself with others you will live a happier life than 90% of Tier 1 NLU grads.
