Yeah, I don't think any of the NLUs do. Been there and thought that. Unless the alternative field you want to pursue is RADICALLY different, in that it's not in the humanities sphere at all, then maybe you can think about it. Otherwise it can still be pretty fulfilling to continue and use that time to maybe think about how you can leverage this to get where you want. The money from a corp job could fund a masters in other field, think tanks could align with public policy type jobs- not knowing much context, just suggesting you think it through from a what value does this degree add perspective. It can be an AMAZING fallback, esp if you've already gone through the 3 years. Consider the sunk cost well and then decide,

Sorry for being blunt. But if you drop out you won't even get a degree; making you ineligible from almost all jobs and Foreign MBAs or MAs. If you have completed 3 years you can atleast survive (not thrive) the next two years.

You haven't explained why you want to do it. What are your future plans etc. So someone can answer from that context.

Well at the risk of being downvoted into oblivion. If your heart’s not in it, you’re sure you don’t want to work as a lawyer, AND you have plans to pursue a different undergrad post this, I would encourage you to go ahead and drop out.

As someone who was never passionate about or even interested in the law who just ended up in law school, I can empathise. Going through with the motions and getting your degree may in fact not be your best option. There’s a reason it’s called the sunk cost fallacy. Contrary to what some have suggested, a law degree at least in India at this time is not a very diverse one which will allow you to walk into different roles outside of the confined set of 3-4 spaces (lit, Corp, policy). It significantly hinders your ability to shift geographies as well, in case you are keen on working abroad. I don’t want to comment on law as a profession, because that is something you will have to make up your own mind on, and you can do that only after having tried it. I know a few who really do enjoy their work, and many who absolutely detest it.

So yes, do it, but only with a solid plan in place. It’s better to start over now and earn a different degree than jump around from law firm to law firm desperately looking for an out, to only finally realize that even if you do find a way, you will have to start over at close to age 30 or so.

As a lawyer looking to move abroad, I relate to that point. I'm in my mid-20s, graduated from a top tier NLU and work at a tier 1 firm. However, my heart is not in it and I'm going to pursue another degree to get out. Though there is a caveat @OP, I don't come from money and law firms have solved the costs of the overseas education problem considerably. So think about this as well!

Agreed - I am pretty much on the same boat as you and looking for different masters degrees which will allow for a safe ish transition out of law. I know this question has been asked many times on LI threads but I’ve never found a particularly helpful response. If you don’t mind, can you please share what degrees/options you’re considering?

I'm currently at the planning stage, so nothing is set in stone - I'm looking to get into public policy and immigrate. It will not be easy and will probably come with growing pains but I'm prepared for that. However, do note that my main motivation is to get out of India and not so much career progression.

For pursuing public policy at a decent US university, you need to be really, really strong in Mathematics and statistics dear, as the course will require you to build models etc. Given that you're a lawyer, that may not be your strong suit. Most Indian students who pursue public policy at Harvard, Stanford, etc. are typically engineers/ economics grads etc. Hence think (and research) this through dear 😘
