Well, no can deny that the PM has never been this politically vulnerable. The teflon coating seems to be wearing off. The only challenger to the BJP can be the Congress and in the next 2 years, there is a direct BJP v Congress fight in more than 12 states. But the Congress needs to accept that even if the Congress gets about 100 seats in 2024, an alternative government can be formed but with a non Congress PM as support from all regional parties will hold the government together. The Congress under Rahul has taken a hard left turn. A lot of people welcome this as we truly are a welfare state and Articles 39(b) and 39(c) even override the basic fundamental rights. But this sort of approach by Rahul has meant that funding has come down drastically and Congress barely gets any money though electoral bonds. If the Congress becomes more economically liberal, then Indian corporates will certainly give more support which can be vital.Pro market people in the Congress like Chidambaram and Manmohan Singh can be crucial in this regard. The 1991 policies has benefited the urban middle class although the NITI Aayog report shows rural economy has suffered since 1991 and rural employment has actually declined. The urban middle class is completely pro BJP. This can change and the Congress needs to project itself as the party which initiated economic liberalisation for it to stand a chance in 2024. The Congress in recent years is running away from the 1991 legacy. What is shocking and disappointing for the Prime minister is that most people are unaware how many economic reforms have been undertaken by this government in the last seven years from coal sector to liberalising FDI but even educated corporate lawyers who have become such super specialists in their practice area think that economy has collapsed in the large few years. The GDP numbers have taken a hit in the past few years but that can be partly attributed to the NPA crisis Modi's economic reforms should start reflecting in the overall gdp growth figures which has not been happening since 17/18.

The economic reforms are not producing jobs, the GST isn't being properly collected and the government is already reneging on its deal with the states to provide commensurate compensation, the taxes on petrol, diesel, cooking gas are at an all-time high, interest rates are at an all time low. Simply changing certain laws at random is not equal to the reform without any proper implementation plan. This government does not pay heed to experts. If the economy is doing so well, then why is the government having to dip into the RBI reserves? The 1% are getting richer, and the government cannot provide affordable healthcare, education to the 99%. Bangladesh is displaying a better GDP growth than India since its inception. There is a common theme visible in many of the speeches of BJP leaders across the country. They will do anything to come to power. Which is not irrational, politically speaking. But they have got very little idea about priorities once they are in power other than to ensure that they do well in the next election. The government wants people to invest into the market, but the complications of that still keeps it away from 95% of the population, plus there is simply no incentive in terms of tax breaks. There is also no stats to prove that urban middle class are overwhelmingly pro BJP. That might only hold true in BJP run states. The recent elections have shown otherwise. BJP has not done anything to better the lives of the middle class, quite the contrary.

They don't need one. This idea that you should vote based on the PM candidate is a regressive one. This is not a presidential election. The PM is not supposed to have extraordinary powers, but behave like the first among equals. Congress does need to get several other things together before it becomes a viable option once again though. Coalition politics is the only thing that would help India in the long run in terms of respecting the federal structure. For example, BJP behaves shockingly with the states that they are not in power in. This is why a party competing for the Centre should not be allowed to compete for state assembly elections too. If it loses, it will ensure that the state remains deprived till it comes into power there. For example, all the ration-related promises made by BJP in Bengal before election has yet again been verified as jumla by government officials now that the elections are over.
