The idiot Maharashtra govt should have designed GLC as MNLU instead opening a crappy new NLU in the middle of nowhere (in the same way as Roorkee and BHU were designated as IITs). Designating GLC as MNLU would have led to the following:

1. Automatically becomes the oldest NLU with the most famous alumni.
2. Alumni of GLC would be proud to be associated with an NLU, so more donations.
3. Location in the middle of the city.

It's actually in the middle of nowhere, especially for a Law School. Further it is shifting to Goregaon, which is just too far away to have the Mumbai advantage. Especially when compared to the only other decent college in Mumbai i.e. GLC which literally sits on marine drive, is a five minute walk from High Court/Sessions Court/Nariman Point. It is a jump away from Churchgate station. So yes Powai is middle of no where, you have to beg rickshaw wallas to take you to Vikhroli which takes 15 minutes. Only thing it is near to is the clubs and powai lake.

GLC has been a good college before but not it's just in shambles.

Reasons

Mumbai University(MU)- just like India were fragile and helpless under British rule, same is with GLC, Mumbai has made sure that such GLORIOUS institution is destroyed.
Imagine having the legacy of 165+ years and be like this. It is the complete failure of the Maharashtra Government and Central Government to not make this alike to contemporary Law schools in India and create an institute of eminence.
Having studied in College where GOATs have studied and now just any other building in Churchgate.
The syllabus is older than Elizabeth queen. The same old method of cramming and mugging all of it and spit it out in an answer sheet on the D-day of examination and hey if your writing and luck are in your favor, you're topper of the Uni.
This institution is only alive because of its students. While the state reservation is way too much but still nevertheless most bunch of people are good to do.

Committees- This is the only a good thing about GLC, to be honest, so you can see the standard. The only way you can create a network or else you're gone for life if you do not join any committee. Most students join them and it's the only way to interact and plus these committees are very active and fun so yeah credit where it is due. The only spice of law school that you get to enjoy the most. while other colleges must be thinking, what's so exciting about it? well, in other N schools, even if you do not join many committees, you can still do good but very rarely a person not involved in committees has fared well in GLC. not saying committees contribute in any skill set or distinct personality but that's how new opportunities open up.

Placement- while I can only review my placecom till the time I am/was there. In our college, most students has secured their way to the job without any contribution of the placecom. this committee is mostly lethargic and incompetent. you can ask them for the number of 2019-2020-2021(lmao) batch placement report. they think they're sitting on the legacy of the GOATs and therefore, the recruiter will come to them and say please please get me students of the current batch at any costs. while you'll think there is a bit of exaggeration in this particular indicator but tbh, it's worse without it as well.
they hardly take any effort while I see the contemporary law school taking so much effort to find jobs on job portals and LinkedIn (One such mention is of AIL, Mohali who are so active and making an effort) and get their student placed. As a student, I know the situation is adverse in job markets but as long as you see your committee making efforts for you, you're content at the end of the day. but students who are in such a position of the committee might not come from a background where they've struggled for things and therefore, they don't have a knack for putting in extra efforts.

Fact for you to believe me
In GLC there is a good amount of students from other states and from out of Mumbai city and suburbs. but still, the committee went ahead and conducted physical interviews in the middle of the pandemic with no sense of empathy and understanding that there could be people who can't come to Mumbai solely for an interview due to these difficult times. there were very few virtual opportunities that we didn't hear of till now.

Absolutely fails in forging a relationship with a recruiter, you will see only 2-3 Tier one firm coming and taking only 1-2 student from a batch 280+320 (total batch size including 3 years and 5 years students) out of which only 70-80 would desire to sit for placement which speaks of the confidence of student that their placecom is good for nothing. Mumbai being the home for the corporates still you'll see not corporates taking the recruits from our college.

I'm back to give you a caution-

I write this on the background of not getting able to find a job in midst of covid, as placements got affected by it. I was emotionally influenced and enraged by thoughts of after spending 5 years in college and now having to look for a job in uncertainity.

I have not at all said about lots of positives of this college, so this should not be taken as a whole analysis to take any desicion of selecting a law school, I later realized that this community is also seen by a lot of aspirants and they might get wrongly influenced by it. therefore, as a responsible student and person, I would like to put to this on record that the above comments ARE PURELY FROM CRITICS POV IN THE CONTEXT OF PANDEMIC.

SO READ IT WITH A PINCH OF SALT AND DO NOT BASE YOUR DECISION COMPLETELY ON THIS.

Perception
The common perception among the student and legal fraternity is that an institution that is history now and doesn't value enough of the students, mind you the students are still good crop but the perception, marketing, not being relevant is where they lose to their contemporary Law schools like N-school who are good in creating perception, markets itself really well.

Affordability
GLC has the most humble fee structure among all the law schools, which makes their case interesting. one-year of academic fees is around 6000 (Aided Section) and 11000(Unaided section) so your degree will cost you either 30000 or 55000. this is a strategic factor tbh. but for an OMS(other state students) the eventual cost of living in Mumbai and food will make up to less fees advantage. finally, if you're an OMS kid, you'll have 1.5 lakh per annum expenditure living in Mumbai., which is almost around the fees of N-schools. but for Mumbai peep this is strategic.

NOW there is no straight answer to whether is this a good school or not. there are categories and there are suggestions. find where you fit.

OMS student
If you're getting NLU till NLUO take it and if you're getting MNLU-Aurangabad and Nagpur then also take it. they are not better than GLC though but in five years of time, you'll get better opportunities there than at GLC.

Maharashtra
take it blindly dude, you're just paying 30000 or 550000 for the whole degree!!! practically this is the best bet and can be leverage against others but leave it only after GNLU and if you don't fall in the below-mentioned category. while one of the reasons it is still surviving is that OMS people and good students of Mumbai are preferring it over NLUs beyond Jodhpur at my time. while this pov is changing as people are opting GNLU and MNLU-M over GLC and I firmly believe that this will continue to build and after 5 years when other new NLUs will improve and find their footing. people from Mumbai will prefer another college instead of GLC. but again this is not happening in the upcoming 5 years. so for now GLC-M beyond GNLU.

Unstructured and Liberal
Unstructured and Liberal in the sense that it does not compel you to do Internships, assignments, research papers of any academic burden. just write 3 papers per semester for 2 years and 4 per semester for 3 years and you'll good to go. it's pretty much relaxed in terms of attendance and which can really help you. if you're aspiring to anything other besides law. this will help you to hustle at anything after giving you a sense of insurance. so this could be the biggest point for OMS and MH people.

Academia
It's a joke over here. do not join GLC if you're one who is purely into academic and allied opportuntites. even LLoyd law school would have better academic in terms of structure and model. but that does not in any way mean that students can soak up to the pressure of academia. not at all, most of my friends who left GLC after 1st year is in TOP 10% of the batch.

Also, this analysis is purely given from a point of view of a 5-year law student for a future 5-year law aspirant. while most the things would apply to a 3-year law student as well, but dynamic changes for them and it's not exactly the same.

Disclaim- this is a heavy but honest critique of GLC, I agree there are a bunch of advantages that this law school may allow but traditionally a student looks for a job and security at the end of law school. but this is still a good college and if taken care it can outshine a few top-tier law colleges given its characteristics but this is not happening so.

**Also, I wished if our alumni had done more to improve our college, comparing the Alumni of other colleges, they are close-knit circles who take after their junior and make it possible for the firm to get to college and connect it to get opportunities. which is what N-school alumni do so better, even after the fact that a student from GLC who has tirelessly interned and is great at the office than N-school kids, still the firm goes for N-school speaks the most of it.

While things are not as rosy as you think at N-school beyond NLU-J, GNLU (somewhat) but they will never tell you honestly because they are surfing in the same boat of perception and marketing as you're. but if you ask them honestly without bias you'll know it struggles there as well.
