I am currently a law student and I’ve always heard people say that the profession is filled with nepotism. How does this even work? Especially in litigation which is purely vocational. Would a client go to someone who is the son of xyz or a lawyer who will him the case? Please explain.

Barring a few exceptions of independent senior advocates and professional firms, nepotism not just runs through but controls the entire legal industry Most family owned law firms especially a particular one with lot of political influence seems to act like they own the legal industry.Nepotism seriously stinks, ruins the industry. The easiest analogy on how is Bollywood, where we are made to endure nepo kids promoted endlessly by one daddy/uncle producer, and the ones, even with serious talent but without family lineage, in industry struggle just to get a break.

Nepo kids rule the roost, but liberalisation may change that.

Well Yeah even as a second gen I would agree there's too much nepotism in the field. Here I see third class lawyers with zero knowledge are able to set up a decent practice because their daddies or uncles keep giving cases to them.Such lawyers are often designated and sometimes even become judges. Also not all second gen lawyers are equally privileged. A lot of second gen lawyers like me come from humble backgrounds and we get no advantage whatsoever apart from rare appearances in our parents cases. We reap no benefit whatsoever.
