My batchmate's mother passed away mid April.
Here's a mail form one of his professors giving him a massive 3 day extension:
It's a shame that students have to go through this. It's not the professor who is apathetic, he is just listening to people above - those in charge in the Admin.
Nothing against SLS H students, they're wonderful people, deserve much better than this.

More power to all students out there going through a tough time and still managing (or even trying to manage) academic commitments.
There's no one solution to this. Principally, its about accommodating and being a good person - extending the deadline till the last possible moment? Roll over the submission to the next semester? All this is pretty common in foreign unis with understanding profs.

And also, I've seen students being pretty kind to faculty in generally doing their best to check up on them if they've been not feeling up to it. At least at my uni, they haven't pressured the exam dept or admin staff on speeding things up such as declaration of results (common practice in regular times). I don't know what more students can do - it's not like they can sanction leave or anything, that's the admin.
Completely agree that empathy is a two way street - and right now, the world needs more of it. There'll be enough instances in 5 year courses to teach students the value of a deadline and work ethic. (un)fortunately, that time is not now.

Thankfully, both of these douchebags were kicked out of NUJS. One is now teaching at a fellowship program and another has joined a tier 2 law firm. I hope they got the Nobel Prize for Professionalism that the world needs right now.
Where are the deadlines when you have to give us results, where is the quality in your teaching?
And please don't tell us we had months to prepare this research paper- We just don't have to write internals- in this competitive environment we are trying to build our CVs by taking part in competitions, doing internships, etc etc (because our internship schedule was spoilt cause of your mismanagement, we were quite accomodative then)
