It will be harder to transition to other business roles though people have certainly done it. A popular route for this is setting up your own startup so that you gain relevant experience and skills and also money if your startup gets acquired. I know of an NLS guy who did this and is now working as a Product Manager in Flipkart and an NLUD guy who got an engineering role at Google the same way.
Cons- no one cares about policy reports. 99% of policy reports are thrown into trash by the babus sitting in south block.
