JGLS hires 22 NLU LLB grads • 30% of fac hold NLU LLBs • Full list of 75 new hires

JGLS Sonepat has hired 75 new faculty for this academic year growing its total full-time faculty strength to 230 from 163, as at the same time last year, growing the proportion of LLB graduates from all national law schools in its faculty to 30%.

Only 8 of JGLS’ faculty had left over the last academic year, according to figures supplied by the university.

And, according to a full break-down of the 75 new hires provided to us on request (see list below), out of the national law schools, the greatest numbers of the new hires hold undergraduate law degrees from NUJS Kolkata and Nalsar Hyderabad:

Total NLU LLB representation at JGLS: 30%

This increases the number of various national law university (NLU) graduate faculty (who are nominally perceived, at least in some Legally India comments, as a possible yardstick of the quality of younger gen-professors) at JGLS to 76, according to a university press release.

Out of those 76 faculty members with an NLU background, the breakdown (including LLB, LLM or other NLU degrees) is as follows:

NUJS: 20 faculty (including 1 LLM, 1 MPhil)
Nalsar: 15 (including 2 LLMs)
NLSIU: 8 (including 3 LLMs)
GNLU: 7
Other NLUs: 6
NLU Jodhpur: 5
RGNUL: 5
NLIU: 5
NLU Delhi: 3
CNLU Patna: 2

In other words, 69 out of JGLS’ 230-strong faculty - 30% - have LLB degrees from NLUs.

Other non-NLU stats

While cracking the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) could be taken at the very least to be a yardstick of a minimum level of competence, an NLU LLB does not seem to be the be-all-and-end-all in getting a JGLS job: more than 85% of faculty members have some sort of international degree, according to the university.

Also, its latest hiring spree has lifted its faculty gender ratio to 50% women (after 60% of its 75 new hires are women). A total of 40% of its “leadership positions” at JGLS are apparently held by women, it said.

Its faculty student ratio currently stands at 1:12 (up from 1:15 when it was established in 2009, with a much smaller student cohort, which has now expanded to more than 2,700).

These 75 new hires include the hire of four senior professors - Prof Upendra Baxi, Prof BS Chimni, Prof Mahendra Pal Singh, and Prof BB Pande - that we had first reported last week.

The average age of JGLS full-time faculty member is 35 years.

Founding JGLS dean Professor C Raj Kumar said in a press release: “The only way to build a world class law school is to be able to hire a world class faculty. JGU offers its faculty members a competitive salary, research benefits comparable to the top international universities along with comprehensive health and accidental insurance coverage, accommodation near the University Campus, staff development allowance, research grants, research rewards for publications and other benefits.

“Most importantly, JGLS has created an academic ecosystem and an intellectually vibrant environment that fosters academic freedom, intellectual autonomy and research independence while providing adequate resources to fulfill the individual and institutional objectives. Our aim has been to provide the faculty members quality time to pursue research and the students to have greater interaction with the faculty members.

“Though, we have achieved a number of milestones in such a short time span, however, we need to set our own standards and work towards promoting gender and other forms of diversities among JGU faculty. This will always be our institutional commitment and we will continue to take sincere efforts in the years to come.”

This is upsetting for those NLU students faced with mediocre faculty . Various VCs have kept alumni out of faculty in various ways, such as:

1) Delaying their applications and instead hiring their own pets from unknown colleges.
2) If inviting external guest lecturers , asking whether they have LLM. If inviting a lawyer with an LLM, then some other excuse. Now we hear NLSIU is asking for money for using lecture halls!
3) Waiving UGC NET for some people, not for others. Pleading ignorance about a new UGC rule saying colleges have to waive UGC NET for candidates with PhDs from top 200 QS ranked colleges.
4) If they hire alumni, bullying them and humiliating them (as happened with a popular prof at NLSIU).

Jindal is just benefitting from the apathy of NLU VCs.

Interesting that NLSIU alumni hailing from Bengaluru, NALSAR alumni hailing from Hyderabad, NUJS alumni hailing from Kolkata etc are migrating to Jindal. What keeps them from teaching at their alma mater? Just lower pay? If you already have a family house and save on rent, doesn't that improve things? Or is it admin politics at NLUs?

Not only that, just look at some examples about recruitment at NLUs. Last time NLSIU hired any permanent faculty was over a decade back. The VC kept even eligible people only on contractual basis so that he could control them. The scene isn't that different in other NLUs either. The recruitment process is highly uncertain and completely opaque. I speak of this as an NLU graduate currently teaching full time at an NLU. When my fellow alumni (capable and qualified) ask about openings, the admin usually just stonewall them. They can't be expected to hang around for ever. NLUD used that opportunity once to get a set of good people too. Although they too have started leaving the place. Some have even shifted to Jindal, which is perhaps the only private law university in India worth going to at present.

RS took a big gamble and hired a good set about 7-8 years ago. They were all taken on contract but he held recruitments soon and all were regularized. That gamble paid off. But he got so much flak for this from the old guard, including litigation and all sorts of allegations of [...], that he has become more restrained. The sad thing is many people now teaching at jindal went looking for a job at nlud. I personally know four of their faculty from top tier Indian law schools and higher degrees from top foreign law schools who went for this purpose. And a senior very well respected academic teaching in a southern law school. But they were all turned away. Private universities can hire whoever they want, whenever they want. NLUs are hampered by being public universities in that respect. But when attempts are made at using ingenious methods, that gives ammunition to the traditional set.

When they compiled these, they decided to send out a full press release to their media contacts, which I guess worked out quite well for them judging by coverage in mainstream media also ;)

Yes, exactly. What is wrong if Jindal does PR? They give red carpet treatment to NLU alumni, through automatic preference in hiring and higher payscales than non-NLU alumni. Shouldn't we instead ask why NLU alumni are treated as outcastes by their own colleges? These VCs want to hire personal servants rather than faculty.

Coz Jindal is a business house looking to cash in on it and attract students with high fees. You may be against capitalism in education, but they have the right to do it. The more relevant question is why NLU VCs are refusing to hire alumni and being so hostile to them.

An NLU degree is actually a hindrance if you want to teach at an NLU. Here are the preferred colleges for faculty hires by NLU VCs:

NLSIU and NALSAR: Andhra University, Mysore University
NLUD: Kurukshetra University
NUJS: North Bengal University, Calcutta University

Sounds great, but could you back this up with facts. Who was the last law person hired by NALSAR who went to Andhra University?

I would guess Dr. Balakrishna and/or Dr. Mallikarjun. They joined NALSAR in 2007/8. This means that the current incumbent, or his predecessor, hired no one from Andhra Uni. in their respective tenures.

In the same lines of 8.1, NUJS currently has two faculty members who've done their graduation from North Bengal University. Both had been hired by Prof. Menon back in 2003. From Calcutta University again, there are only three (law faculty). In fact, the number of law faculty currently teaching at NUJS who have graduated from one NLU or another is actually more than the faculty who might have graduated from any other single university.
But why bother with facts, after all? Not to mention that this sort of comparison is done simply to show one's contempt for traditional university grads, whereas almost every student who has graduated from any NLU and has already established themselves in the real world have teachers graduating from traditional universities only to thank for when it comes to their own education.

The rather particular professor from North Bengal is not a Menon hire. He joined as a temporary lecturer during Chimni's time, with MP Singh extending his tenure. He gets high scores in teaching feedback, for reasons we know.

No, that's NUJS. It currently has 9 NLU LLB alumni teaching there including contractual people. Would be 10 from next semester onward. 5 of them are permanent, the other 5 would be contractual.

'Friend', the names of all the people teaching there have been revealed in the comments section several times here. If you can't do the diligence or Kian would only post about the lists of paying clients, that's on you. Then kindly refrain from making the claim with regard to any NLU. And what on earth is a neutral source in this regard? Why would a student of NUJS say someone is teaching there when they aren't? Someone made a factual claim, I rebutted with another fact. I can name all NLU LLB alumni teaching at NUJS. Saurabh Bhattacharjee, Shameek Sen, Shouvik Guha, Agnidipto Tarafder and Mahesh Menon are the permanent teachers, all of whom are NLU LLB grads. Paromita Dasgupta, Ruchika Ghosh, Anwesha Pal and Reshmi Bothra are the contractual ones teaching at present. Another person is due to start from next sem. Of all the names mentioned here, one is from NALSAR, one from NUALS and the rest from NUJS. I hope if you are making similar claims about any other NLU, you can provide such facts. Provided you actually bother to find any while making comments. If the original question had been which NLU's website makes the claim of having most NLU LLB alumni teaching there, I wouldn't have mentioned NUJS. I only did so because it said which NLU is having most of them actually teaching there.

Let Kian come out and say that he's made a single genuine attempt to figure out whether the info given about NLU grads teaching at NUJS is true or not despite much debate about this issue in earlier posts. He hasn't. Instead, he likes to allow these comments and rebuttals to be posted here so that the bickering continues. I'm sure he's access to NUJS insiders and can verify this info in a day flat should he choose to. You all should ask yourselves the question, why doesn't he? And who benefits?

Kian, I'm sure you know one or more teachers personally at every NLU. Why not simply ask them about their colleagues? Websites are notoriously outdated as you rightly pointed out. Even all students may not know where a junior faculty might have graduated from unless the latter parades that out in front of everyone.

@Yoyo: Actually, the NUJS website does mention 7 people out of the 9 as claimed by 9.1 earlier. I believe the other 2 have just joined a couple of months back and given the usual delay involved in updating (yes, you can rightfully blame our website and those in charge for that), their names aren't reflected yet. 7 is still more than almost any other NLU, although NALSAR is actually catching up fast with their robust ad-hoc hiring from what my friends over there tell me. I don't think it's actually a competition though. The more alum join NLUs for teaching, the better. Our best teacher is actually a NALSAR grad himself.

As has been pointed out already, the website does mention seven of the nine people apart from the two who have joined this semester. However, people who want to bicker would keep doing so regardless of any actual reason to. Otherwise, anybody who is mentioning names and universities of specific teachers would usually be considered to be an insider and hence outsiders ought to place reliance on their representation unless such outsiders have information to the contrary that they can share with all. If you are asking why NUJS does not put out a press release every time an NLU grad is hired as a faculty, then I am glad we do not do so, since it appears to be tasteless to me.

I can vouch for all these names too. With the addendum that guest faculty itself may be a misnomer for some NLUs. Some of these people aren't permanent, but contractual. They still share the same workload as others. However, I happen to know for a fact that at some NLUs, contractual people are actually called guest faculty even when they share the same workload as full-time permanent faculty. I know that for sure for NUJS and NLUJ. Not sure whether other NLUs do this too.

I'd have asked how this comment allowed someone to reach at the conclusion that NALSAR even has the highest number of NLU grads teaching there at present, let alone the best faculty (not that I'm saying they don't), especially since the guy in 9.1.1.1.1 has also named nine people teaching at NUJS, but why bother? Trolls would keep on trolling. I'm just happy none of those 9+8=17 good people hopefully looks at the comments section and its trolls and instead keeps doing things for legal education in the country that none of the trolls ever had the guts or ability to do.

@9.2.3: Your comment only proves that you [...] cannot count. One person said NALSAR has 8 NLU grads teaching there, another said NUJS has 9. Both named all the people involved. The first guy also said NALSAR has 9 people with foreign degrees, although that was not being discussed originally. I'm sure there are several people at NUJS too to have the same (I know at least 8 of their faculty do, might be more since I don't know everyone teaching at NUJS). How this allowed you to reach at your 'logical' conclusion only you can tell. Doesn't bode well for whatever institution you have graduated from at least. To conclude, none of these degrees is any indication of teacher quality whatsoever. I've seen people with NLU and/or foreign degrees teach atrociously and with varying degrees of inaccuracy and those with degrees from traditional colleges deliver excellent lectures. Everybody with any sense knows better than you do, actually, about judging teacher quality from their graduation degrees.

The line is thin and sometimes arbitrary, but there are few rough guidelines. SRAs usually have more work ex/internships, a few more publications/moots and maybe attended a student exchange programme during their LLB. This leads to a minor pay hike and they are given some additional responsibilities (e.g. help with moot coaching or mentoring JGLS students going on exchange). Another factor is that certain subjects perpetually have a faculty shortage in India, so some people can negotiate better pay.

It is not dependant on the college, but what happens is that certain NLUs give you a head start because they have good in-house journals which give an outlet to publish + a good mooting culture + student exchanges.

I have a genuine question. Why are almost everyone commenting on this thread assuming that these new hires are stellar teachers before most of them have even begun to prove themselves? I mean, that's something only their students should be able to vouch for, right? With regard to research too, why not wait a bit to see the sort of research they might produce before pronouncing the verdict? I'm not saying they won't or can't do good work, but there's just as much possibility that some of them may turn out to be just as mediocre as the people they are being compared against! If you want to praise the Jindal admin's decision to hire many teachers and to insist on foreign/NLU degrees, then that can be done. Although degrees have rarely been the benchmark of good teaching ability, I guess something objective is better than nothing.

I'm at JGLS and have sat through the classes of 4 of these new professors, one of them being a regular instructor for my class. Thoroughly disappointed to the extent that students in their classes seem to have given up on the subject being taught. Bloated CVs don't guarantee great teachers.

I once taught at Jindal and thankfully escaped in time. But I can tell you something about the Jindal model. It has mostly two kinds of faculty - very senior super stars who are too big to be burdened with too much teaching. Or very young, inexperienced people who may have gone to fancy law schools but are not yet capable of holding their own in a classroom. There are very few people who have experience and ability to both do good teaching and solid research. These people are few and get spread out. That is why many students don't get to study with good teachers at all. And this is why NLUs with far fewer good faculty are able to perform so much better than Jindal. But this model works for Jindal. It can get the bulk of its faculty cheap since they are very inexperienced and then it needs only some superstars to add the glitz and glamour. Ask yourself this - who are considered the top ten-fifteen mid career law academics in India? And how many of them teach at Jindal? Very few - if any at all (unless you start believing Jindal's own hype about its faculty). Most such people are still found in NLUs. And since the batch sizes are small, a student at a decent NLU has a better chance of being taught by good faculty than Jindal. NLUs don't have to worry about a few big ones moving as long as the good mid career people are still with them.

+1000. This is very true. I paid lakhs and lakhs for being mostly taught by people barely out of college. Most of them did not have the maturity to understand their subject, let alone how to deal with students. The problem has only grown worse now. Look at the number of SRAs and RAs here! Good faculty also mostly don't stay for too long. Jindal has become a revolving door. It seems harsh, but the truth is that Jindal is either a retirement home for the older faculty or a pitstop on the way to better things for the younger lot.

You paid to learn the subject. The age of the teacher teaching it to you is immaterial. I've seen many 25 year olds teaching certain subjects with greater clarity than people twice their age would ever attain. If the teacher isn't teaching well, regardless of their age, you are supposed to provide feedback, complain etc. Are you doing that? Is the admin not paying attention to it, just like NLU admin don't?

Age matters very little in terms of how well a person teaches or researches. Raj Kumar himself became a VC at 35. Look at the new NLS VC, who was also appointed as a full professor quite young. Even the other NLU faculty that people keep commenting about in LI comments, must have been 25 year old teachers once, and would have worked their way up. Abroad, people become professors in top law schools in their early 30s. The world is changing. JGLS rewards people on the basis of how good they are, not on the basis of how old they are.

Actually, a lot of NLUs do insist on NET qualification even for contractual teachers these days (certainly for permanent ones), though not every NLU does so. JGLS doesn't. NLUs also hold recruitment very rarely and a lot of uncertainty is involved. At the most, regular credit courses can be offered year-round, that too mostly at the top NLUs. The salary part is true too, of course. These people would be paid at JGLS more on joining as a fresher than a permanent NLU Assistant Professor makes after putting in 5 years of service. That does make a huge difference unless balanced by a sense of idealism that may drive one to stay or join at NLUs despite all the obstacles.

Oh please. For one thing, what is this scoffing at higher salaries, as if joining a place that pays higher salaries is a bad thing? Teachers shouldn't be paid well? Only corporate lawyers and litigators should make money? Also, go ask people on this list if they approached NLUs. I know if at least two who had approached NLUs and were turned away. I am not saying that NLU VCs are at fault. They may not have the rules to make the hires. But they also lack the imagination to create the rules that will allow them to make these hires. Ranbir Singh had done that at NLUD and managed to get a good crop. Unfortunately, he got so much push back for it from the older lot that he has stopped making those sorts of hires anymore and now turns people away. And, don't discount work conditions. Jindal incentivises research and provides support for conference travel and for updating skills etc. It provides administrative support so that a faculty member can focus more on doing research and teaching instead of running around for simple admin tasks. Which NLU does that? If any NLU wants to get good faculty, maybe you should ask what will make the place attractive for good faculty, instead of running down people who decide to join elsewhere.

Are you kidding me? I applied to most of the older NLUs and also the newer NLUs. None of them wanted to take me as a faculty without UGC-NET. They hung up on me when I called to ask them about my application from abroad, and I never received email replies. Not to say that I was under-qualified as I had the top rank in a degree from a relatively well-known European law school in its field (ranked quite high in THE) and also had the top rank in my UG which was from a newer NLU.

Now I teach at a top European law school out of compulsion, but JGLS also offered me a place. I will never go to teach at any NLU even if they offer me twice the amount of money JGLS or any other university offers just by virtue of the treatment I received being an alumnus.

Not that it means they should treat you horribly, but only your own NLU can be expected to make special dispensation for you on the ground of you being alumni. Okay, so there are two things to clarify here:

1. The point was not regarding 'special treatment' by any NLU, but whether there were avenues for foreign-qualified people to actually contribute back to education in India. Had I not been an NLU alumnus, my comment stays the same as well. The comment I replied to suggested that it was mostly by choice that foreign-qualified people do not go to teach at NLUs and that NLUs accept all faculty applications with wide open arms. That is not the case is what I wanted to convey. Of course no one is entitled to 'special treatment', but the administration is not quite accepting of most people, unlike JGLS.

2. That also brings me to the point about favouring own people. No, I do not want special treatment from anyone, but an outright disqualification because foreign-qualified people are unable to give UGC-NET seems a bit odd. JGLS fully capitalises on the situation and recruits people while they are pursuing their LL.M. without regard for UGC-NET qualifications. To say that that is wrong either for JGLS or for the (prospective) employees is not a fair statement.

Actually, it technically is wrong. JGLS operates within UGC rules, seeks NAAC accreditation and NIRF ranking etc. Therefore, the minimum standards prescribed by the UGC apply there too, as it does to all NLUs. One of them being you need to have a masters degree and UGC NET qualification to be hired as an assistant professor. Now, being private and not a public institution, JGLS has certain flexibility to play with the rules without people looking too closely. Hence it starts those people off as RAs, SRAs etc. Some NLUs have tried to do that under certain VCs, but the fact of the matter is that it is irregular if not illegal and hence prone to legal challenges. Such challenges might even succeed when it happens in an NLU, because of again the public institution angle. Now I completely agree that NET is a useless requirement, but it's not that people doing foreign LLM cannot sit for it and clear it, provided they have got an Indian LLB at least. The exam takes place twice a year. Several foreign LLM holders I know have actually cleared it. By all means, let us agitate to remove this requirement by the UGC or at least make it optional. But so long as it is the law, not adhering to it doesn't give any institution special credit. They can try bending it, of course, but again, the litigation threat is there. That's being used more in the NLU context than it used to be 10 years back. I am not saying an NLU where you're applying to shouldn't do you the basic courtesy of reverting to you, being polite and keeping you informed of the possible ways to retain you in other capacity till you clear NET, but not that they should have broken the law to help you get entry. If you want to join private sector because of relaxed norms (no matter how stupid those norms are), that's of course your prerogative, but this is what happens when nobody challenges those norms for years.

Well, fair point. I completely agree to what you said.

JGLS hires RAs and SRAs and then promotes them to Assistant Professors, but we also do not know whether that promotion is subject to a UGC-NET qualification. Maybe an insider can shed light on this. I certainly do not know enough to comment on that.

Also, it is kind of inconvenient to appear for the UGC-NET while pursuing a foreign LL.M.. Again, sure, it is possible and there have been people who have done that, but it certainly is a costly affair if you are not studying in places like Singapore. It is definitely burdensome for people that have gone abroad only with financial assistance.

The JGLS style of appointing RAs at a pay-scale of (more than) UGC-Assistant Professor level gives people time to clear the UGC-NET once they come back. So, again, fair points. Agreed.

Do you actually know the meaning of autonomy and the difference between that and following minimum standards? What exactly do you mean being 'bound by NET' only you know. If any institution gets university status in India and is handing out degrees, then theoretically it is supposed to follow certain standards prescribed by the UGC and/or sectoral regulators like BCI in case of law. Now if you are a private university and have deep enough pockets, then you may not follow it and still get away with it. That doesn't mean you aren't supposed to follow it. By your logic, after getting IOE status, JGLS can simply do away with the need for its faculty to have an LLM either! Or even LLB. Because no other regulations apart from UGC says that such degrees are mandatory to be a teacher. No public or statutory university can ever hope to get away with it in this day and age. Every rational individual laughs at NET. Not everybody has the luxury not to have to follow it. The IOE status gives JGU the right to design its own courses, offer hybrid degrees and hire foreign faculty. One may argue that the last one also allows it to hire people with foreign LLMs without NET. Even if that argument is accepted, then it means that till the IOE status comes into effect, JGU didn't have such liberty under law. If it already did for all these years, then what's the use of the status?

Actually JGLS can hire whoever they choose. They are not bound by UGC and only have to comply with BCI rules on this, which do not require idiotic qualifications such as NET but they do require an LLB/LLM.

The focus on NET has been led primarily by conservative and insecure older faculty with worthless degrees and even more worthless IQ who stand to get bypassed badly if the younger lot with better experience and degrees from reputed law schools both in India and abroad are allowed to freely join NLUs. Others supporting them are the bottom-rankers from the NLU LLB batches who choose to stay behind, do their LLM& PHD from their alma maters and then bask in the adulation of being an "NLU alumni" who's teaching (or "giving back") to his alma mater. [...]. Ironically none of the good younger teachers who ever stayed or remain at these NLUs had NET.

At JGLS there are a few headaches in the HR policy and admin issues but none centered around presence or absence of NET. That's why theres such a diversity of talent in the faculty. Whatever one may say about the fees or student quality, theres simply no place like JGLS for a galaxy of well qualified, modern, broad-minded faculty.

To be fair, JGLS people never say bad things about NLUs. They just beat their own trumpet. Which they are perfectly entitled to do so long as they are being accurate about it. This one counts as being accurate, they actually employ more NLU grads than any NLU does. Their notification about having had the best placement in the country year before last didn't. Call it out when it deserves to be called out, not otherwise.

Nobody neutral can give you that data about teaching ability of teachers. Because there isn't any objective criterion to ascertain it. At best you can try capturing the research output data, which too is an indicator only. A lot of good teachers can't spend time for research because universities pile up teaching and admin workload on them. Their students only know how good a teacher they are. Very difficult to establish that before the outside world. That's why CLAT aspirants should only consider student/alumni achievements. Your university may have a teacher who has excellent publications, but it's what impact he may have on you as a student that matters to you, not much else. For instance, take JGLS. Not all of their teachers can teach all of their students even once in 5 years owing to the batch size. If I end up missing being taught by an excellent faculty, what use is his excellence to me as a student?

Kian, here is an attempt at a ranking of faculty in different law schools. This is based on information from friends who are students and alumni, plus publicly available info. Comments welcome.

1: NLUD: A very good mix of young and experienced faculty, who also publish and do interesting research.

2 I would have ranked JGLS as joint 1 but one problem keeps it to 2: the large batch size means not all students will get the best teachers.

3: NALSAR. As similar mix like NLUD, but the focus is too much on human rights and public law subjects.

How are you coming to this conclusion about NLUD? According to their website (cross checked with friends from NLUD) this is the status of their faculty:

From NLUs

(4) Chinmayi Arun - NALSAR (on leave since last year - she is doing another LL.M at Yale this year)

There are other people from NLUs/foreign degree holders who work in research centres but do not teach. They are not considered part of the faculty. There are some other teachers who are considered good, but don't have foreign degrees - Yogesh Pai and Daniel Mathews (LLM from NLSIU) amongst them.

Most of their other faculty are mediocre to horrible. The ones mentioned here are considered to be very good. But two of them are on leave and are not expected to return. Aparna Chandra is on leave this semester and is supposed to be leaving very soon too (another big catch for Jindal perhaps?).

Don't fall for NLUD PR that easily please.

What about the number of publications and quality of publications from the fac members? May be LI should also conduct an independent inesigative study of all NLUs on this aspect, using the info available regarding the journal names and names of book publishers. Lets see which NLUs come at the top.

These lists may not be very accurate. It's kind of surprising that the list completely failed to reflect where fac members did their LLM! Both the lists will be much longer if that correction is attempted. Also, if LI has the courage and interest to do an independent investigation, it could possibly conduct surveys among LI readers from each campus to evaluate each fac member on 4 or 5 parameters. It just needs to ensure that partipants had taken atleast one course offered by the concerned fac

Adding to the above comment posted listing the NALSAR alumni, I wish to point out that these professors have very good track records and degrees from renowned international universities. NALSAR students have a certain dignity and do not resort to boasting about having a lot of excellent NLU alumni faculty, even if it is true. Also, certain NLU students are spreading total fake news about the quality of their faculty.

How do you know all this, mate? Which NLU do you belong to? Ever seen any NLU student in his life praising his own teachers when they don't deserve such praise? Because I haven't. Most of the time they don't even praise where it is deserved. Maybe they are all 'dignified' like you said. As for track records, you do realise some of the people mentioned in the list haven't even been teaching for a semester, right? Probably you don't, since you hardly seem to know anything else either. That doesn't make them bad teachers, but it sure as hell makes you look less than 'dignified'.

As a neutral person, I honestly think NALSAR is the best NLU today. The VC is dynamic, the profs are well qualified with old hands and young turks, the profs work on good research projects and give students the chance to be RAs and the campus infrastructure is amazing.

Mr Kian Ganz and CLAT coaching centres have ZERO clue about the real issues with faculty, instead getting swayed by the PR teams of JGLS and NLUD . Here are the 5 critical questions we need to ask.

1. For JGLS: What is the batch size in relation to the star profs? Does every student get taught by the star profs? For example, sections A and B can have an excellent and experienced tort law professor hired at a big salary and publicised to the world, but sections C and D can have a mediocre person hired at a low salary who JGLS will hide from the world.

2. For both : Which star profs are on leave for more than 2 years? 1.5 to 2 years of leave is ok, but for longer than that please state on your website that they are on leave. One is entitled to take leave for even 10 years, but please make it clear that they are on leave and doing only research, no teaching.

3. For both: Which star profs teach subjects other than human rights, consti law, juris etc? In other words, are the students getting good education in commercially relevant subjects or just one set of subjects?

4. For NLUD: Why are publications, grants, fellowships etc not listed for most people?

5. For both: When you say NLU-qualified faculty, please also say which NLU they are from.
