Consultancy RSG India’s 2015 ranking of India’s top 40 law firms has seen no change in the six largest Indian firms since 2013, with Amarchand Mangaldas continuing to top the rankings, followed by Khaitan & Co and AZB & Partners tied in second place.
The ranking, which was circulated by a law firm today (see below), sees J Sagar Associates (JSA) in fourth position.
Luthra & Luthra and Trilegal are neck-and-neck in fifth and sixth place respectively, with Trilegal besting Luthra in the “client satisfaction score”.
S&R Associates and Economic Laws Practice (ELP), in seventh and eighth place, boast the highest client satisfaction score in the top 10 with 8.9 and 9.0 out of 10.
The ranking is compiled from 167 Indian law firms for 35 different data points, with a score out of 40 consisting of 10 maximum points each for capacity, profile, quality of mandates and client satisfaction.
Desai & Diwanji rose three places in the rankings from 2013 to ninth place, while Talwar Thakore & Associates dropped three to 10th, but still boasts a strong client satisfaction score of 8.8.
Client satisfaction is derived from 514 interviews with the firm’s own clients, graded across 12 parameters.
Wadia Ghandy, Nishith Desai Associates, Platinum Partners, Kochhar & Co and Bharucha & Partners round out the top 15.
Bharucha & Partners was the best performer compared to 2013, having jumped 12 places to 15th this year, while Dua Associates climbed 13 spots to 26th.
Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan saw the biggest drop by 12 places from seventh in 2013 to 19th this year.
ALMT Legal lost 15 places from 21st to 36th.

They entered, because they have clients who are happy. Because they are a busy bunch of smart lawyers. Got it, you astonishing prick!
Also 292 lawyers still at Luthra doesn't seem correct (wonder how long before they jump off the sinking ship).
Wonder how the CAM and SAM split will shake up the ranking.
PS - I don't work at KCO.
PS - I work at KCO.
Try:
Actually, no. It's only a league table. Relax!
Kian, you seem to be averse to using any other punctuation mark apart from a comma.
;)
(Jees, seriously though, why is everyone so sensitive nowadays... :)
Kian, Karma's a bitch.
That sounds fair. But when your trolling gets boring to anyone except me and you, I'll reserve the right to curtail your karmic retribution. Deal?
He needs Bholenath ki aashirwaad!!
But, what the heck?!
(German's my mother tongue; they love long sentences)
Whats your real name Kian? Own up now. Kian is not a German name and Ganz doesnt sound like a German surname.Kian Ganz Mueller?
Kian is a German spy in the country to influence political and legal situations. He is being funded by a foreign enemy source. Any investigations into Kian's Swiss bank accounts? Prachi as joint account holder? :P
Wow! Both their clients are very happy, it seems :)
Either that or their clients have "lower" expectations. Kian - how many featured and acknowledged lawyers in these firms and who are the ones in the top 5 firms? Those numbers and names matter as they bring the firm the scores and client ratings.
you seems to belong from so called "top 5 firms" so naive "grow up boy law is not about doing the same set of documentation again and again" cheers..!!!
Kian do you believe these rankings are fair..??? 9.2 giving me cramps
1. Only referring very happy prime client contacts to the researchers,
2. Briefing clients in advance that they should please be super nice (and maybe incentivising them in some way).
That said, if clients give good reviews, at some level, some clients must kind of like a firm.
Kochhar, perhaps to the surprise of some, does actually have a reputation for pretty good quality management and they work almost 50% for foreign companies. They might not pick up the marquee deals, but in the commercial sphere they have pretty wide reach and are clearly able to deliver to some of their clients.
So yeah - treat the rankings with a large pinch of salt, but RSG's efforts are a pretty rigorous attempt at a trustworthy ranking, in my humble opinion.
Apart from few real estate champs perpetually doing leases, kochhar has a pretty good pool of young, smart & intelligent lawyers having a good insight of law, unlike many zealots here who are struggling to make their identity flaunting the only things they have name of "top 5 firms" .... seriously bunch of losers, be a sport :P
Somethings wrong with ALMT since 6-7 years. It has always been on a decline and is continuing its trend. Post Clasis split ALMT were always on the downward trend. Well, Clasis has itself vanished now!!
What the heck is SB Partners doing there, nobody has even heard of it!
You are really comparing Crawford to K Law? These rankings are not based on the age of the law firms!! K Law has top clientele, Crawford is absolutely nothing. K Law pays freshers salaries which is thrice the amount Crawford does! Crawford is only Sanjay Asher, nothing else!!
Salary being 3 times more is highly doubtful!!
Yes Crawford hires around 1-2 from NLS for Sanjay Ashers team in Capital Markets for such salary. Please do not tell me every fresh Associate is offered 10.5. We all know that Crawford offers freshers 10-25k per month. Apart from the Capital Markets practice of Sanjay Asher, Crawford Bayley does not have much.
It's surprising.. But, it's actually true. That's a fact.
What is SKA? I guess Associate of all top law firms travel by business class. Unless you do not wish to over bill a client. Law firms have been trying to cut on OP's these days. SKA a law firm or partner would surely not be paying for business class from his own pockets, it would be ultimately be paid by clients. So what is your point?
Ohh ok
Are you some bl00dy partner of Lexygen? Any report, ranking, league table is out and you come posting about Lexygen. As advertising is banned, do you think posting about some Lexygen on every post of Legally India will get you clients? [...]
The website looks more of an advertisement than a law firm. Just like your posts and comments here. Would be interesting to refer your website to BCI and get their views. Probably you might be in the news very soon!!
- The Phantom will strike.....

However, these days Lexygen keeps a fairly low profile, so this troll might either be some ex-Lexygen person wanting more Lexygen coverage, or just pointing out that Lexygen has not grown as much as people once hoped it might...
The comments are a bit obnoxious but haven't moderated them too often for now. Should we do so more often? They're not offensive or inappropriate, per se, they're just a bit of an LI meme it seems.
It adds flavour to LI.
I do not think it can be moderated, as such comments do not violate any rules. It seems like a current Associate who wants or wishes Lexygen be in the news by reminding the public about it. However, the more comments he posts just proves and reminds us that Lexygen is no where now. Not to forget, people might just visit their website to see all the advertisements and complain to BCI.
TTA needs to hire some big names to move up the ladder. The top 5 will always be only full service firms and not niche boutique firms.
What they need is more practice areas. Look at similar firms in the rankings and it tells the story. snR does lit as well. Platinum does no finance. Message is you need to cover more areas to rise up the rankings.
But do any of the partners of these firms care about random rankings from people like RSG? They should care more about quality and profitability and paying and treating associates well. You can't beat firms like TTA and Khaitan (now) for that.
Having said that, I am not against hiring ex GCs and ex Ambassadors or Stars, as these are the ones who are the rainmakers. PS: I might be entirely wrong in my analysis, (I really wish I am), because I want firms like LKS to do well. :)
Haters going to hate.....you guys are pathetic....leave if you're so unhappy....there are plenty of people that love working at one of highest revenue per lawyer firms in the country....
Really like you're a client... sure buddy....Unless the exodus is in Tax, Lit or Competition I doubt the firms MP will even care
anyways my law office also won prestigious legal KHEERA lallantop laaaa firm of the year award 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 (done be surprised i booked/purchased them for coming three years in advance). conspicuously, now my firm is on the top..:)
how can i Forget you my friend, entire court knows how fond you are of lollypop's..:P
BTW since AMSS will be extinct I wonder if RSG will modify its rankings to include a new number one? Also how will they include SAM and CAM considering they have just started?
Who's the best firm of us all,
The one which pays me the most,
Dollars, Pounds, Francs in every post,
Speak to your friends and subjects I will,
And to the clients you did not bill,
Like Gandhi's monkeys I shan't hear, or see or tell,
When you pay me in a currency, I like whose smell,
So what if your Partners and slaves leave your ship,
I will make you look a benign angel, just mind my tip!
Pay per use..hell, no this is pay for views!!!
1. I have not ever heard of any allegation that the RSG reports are pay=to-play or otherwise amenable to bribery,
2. it was a cute poem and could reasonably be in the realm of satire.
1. If it's immediately followed by a comment classing it as a satirical, untrue allegation, I think that considerably tempers the defamatory aspect.
2. I'm fairly sure that Reena is not the type to get hung up over an anon poem on a website, unlike you.. .
Good luck Juris Corp & Mr. Jayesh!
