There's nothing like knowledge in this profession, just accumulated experience which makes a senior indispensable. Experience creates contacts, increasing briefs, more contacts, more work, more money, more reputation, and then even judges listen to you, more case winning, more cases and this goes on and on.

I know a few of HC and District court seniors who even don't know which act will apply to which situation, and they're having Chauffeur driven cars.

Law isn't the most important thing in this profession, may be the least important!

Okay, I get your point that contacts are essential and often all you need to make it in this profession.

But are there genuinely no practitioners who actually want someone knowledgeable to join their chambers?

Honestly, I feel that at least at the fresher level, there must be many advocates and seniors with years of solid practice and experience who would take on juniors simply to maintain workflow (even if they pay very little). Do they also only care about contacts? Does no one value merit and knowledge anymore?

It’s genuinely disturbing if this is how chamber recruitments are made. Let's take the example of Yuvraj Singh, he’s retired from cricket, but even after retirement, he’s coaching players like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, passing on his knowledge and expertise to the next generation. I know it’s not the perfect analogy, but it captures my point: there must be some good seniors and advocates who actually want juniors to learn, work hard, and develop discipline for the future of the fraternity, and in that case atleast they would be seeking merit based interviews? Or is even that is a fairly tale dream?

I’m not saying they do it out of affection or respect for their juniors. Regardless of how they treat them, their ultimate goal is to ensure that both they and their juniors get better at what they do.

If such advocates exist, and I believe they do, then the question raised by the OP becomes valid. The previous answers only focused on the “contacts” aspect, which may answer point 5, but there are other important points worth discussing.

Do no advocates or chambers conduct interviews to assess a candidate’s knowledge before taking them on? If not, that’s a really deplorable situation. In that case, the coming gen should genuinely flood in-house & law firms; at least there, recruitment is structured and somewhat merit-based, with a payment at which you can eat something everyday without thinking of maintaining budget till end of month.

And to be clear, I’m not saying it’s the senior’s job to teach anyone. This is a profession built on practice, and everyone has to develop their own skills and knowledge. But there surely must be some good chambers with enough work to give young individuals exposure when they’re just starting out in litigation. In such cases, the question raised by the OP remains perfectly valid.

Contacts are one-half of your practice. I used to think your calibre & acumen is the other half, but I'm not too sure of it; contacts are the other-half of your practice as well.

I have worked at someone's chamber and now have my independent practice for the last several years. There is no other answer to it, period. Hell, half of the questions asked in OP are inapplicable.

Lol, seems funny that while many senseless topics gets so many hot, worthwhile & helpful comments, this one topic, which would essentially help more than 70% law students is not being answered by those who have crossed this recruitment stage.. is it because this platform is filled with people only interested in corporate or is there something wrong with wanting to excel in litigation?

2. Whether doing a favour for your relative / uncle will benefit the AoR / Senior Adv's practice

3. Brush up on your social capital and how well connected you may be to people
