Hi. Don’t you think that M7 MBA considers work experience much higher than a JD? Maybe that’s where they both differ. Plus, the lsac GPA normalisation gets really niche when you actually apply for the T-14 schools as the above comment mentions here. I think Indians don’t apply for JD cause no one wants to prepare for a rigorously tough US exam (unlike the sat or gmat) like JD after spending five years, where already one is having a law degree. That doesn’t make JD a less valuable degree or in fact I feel it’s just as prestigious as a M7 MBA, if not more. US citizens consider JD a much bigger deal, whereas M7 mba is a global attraction. I hope this settles the debate.

Hardly anyone applies because they won’t get in and already they are having an equivalence degree, not because the degree is less relevant. There is a reason why T-14 law schools are the best in the world. And your argument is emblematic of strawman. I never talked about H-1B visa or stuff like that. Yes it’s hard to get. Its simply not about prestige. It s also about which degre gives you more options, money and stability. MBA hands down here. Don’t forget mba is gives you transferable skills which you can use in any geography. JD restricts you to US.

If you go to Harvard for JD and don’t end up willing the H1B lottery. What the hell would you do? Come back to India? How will you pay off the student loans then?

Whereas after MbA you get 3 years OPT, which means 3 chances at H1B. Even thereafter you don’t end up getting H1B, you can always seek transfer within your company to Europe/Canada/Singapore. MBA gives you wings to fly. JD simply doesn’t.

If you have to come back to India, a JD is of no use. Also remember- even in US, after JD, you have to work at a big law firm, which would be more prestigious than Indian Lala firms- but equally brutal hours and mind numbing work. MBA gives you much more options (banking/consulting/corp strategy/ startup/ marketing) etc.

See what makes more sense for internationals. There’s a reason why people from top IITs/AIIMs/ NLUS/ Stephens etc are vying for M7 MBA. And hardly anybody from India would even apply for a Harvard JD. Check the stats.

For international students, LSAC does not assign a numerical GPA. It only gives you a qualitative rating- average, above average etc. your GPA hardly affects your admission consideration.

It is a well known fact that lsat only matters the most for law school admissions for international students. Spend some time on law school admissions Reddit and educate yourself

Harvard would still like your GPA to be rated above average, but any random person from Amity law college in India with 60% or above would be given above average grade.

In addition, trolls here forget that getting into a business school means giving up law together. Those who only came into law because they could get nothing else obviously salivate at the prospect of MBAs and try to champion such options above everything that's related to law.

I am pleased at this intervention, but think it could have come quicker. I also wonder if the moderators could be allowed to do a bit more than mark comments with tags such as 'trollish', 'contested', etc.? Could reliably-sourced material (i.e., HLS's own admission policies) be linked to by mods, for example? Doing something like that, in addition to the placing of tags, would, I think, help demonstrate this (moderation) as being a credible process.

Are you high or something? An international GPA is not converted into US 4.0 scale by LSAC and hence is not counted for rankings. Schools hardly care about international GPA. You get a good lsat score and you are in.

Hi. I think most of the readers don’t know what a Harvard JD (not knowing may sound pathetic) is in the first place, prolly for them a Harvard llm is itself a big deal. Getting in is a very big deal and I think majority of readers do acknowledge that. It’s just a few trollers who love to spew nonsense anyway.

Maybe, instead of writing posts on LI to gain upvotes or LinkedIn for 'likes', why not use LinkedIn in the best way it can be used - to network? Maybe connect with her on there (by sending an invitation with a properly crafted 300 character long note, explaining how you found out about her and why her career is of interest to you), actually write a proper message to her, ask for an informational interview and find out about her trajectory? Maybe do that by starting with questions about something specific, e.g., the moot or her working under a judge and ask for advice about how to bag such things, and then about other achievements? Or is that too much serious work for you?

@Kian why y’all allow fake information like this? Not only lsat scores matter here but your forefather’s history is even considered. Understand JD is a proper degree unlike LLM. It’s actually what Harvard Law is. Your undergraduate GPA is also given weightage.

Rates of H1B acceptances via lottery are declining and not increasing (see https://www.forbes.com/sites/stuartanderson/2024/03/04/employers-face-difficult-odds-as-h-1b-visa-cap-selection-starts/ stands at only 25 percent for FY 24). As such, I'm not sure how this comment is not relevant anymore. As for people from other institutions going for a JD, I don't see how that strengthens your argument in any way. Of course there are going to be some people with greater resources and risk taking appetite than others. For someone not born in India, a direct green card may also be an option since they are awarded based on place of birth and not nationality. Since the wait time for those born in India is in many years, H1B is the only option for most, but for a small but not insignificant minority of Indians born elsewhere, the process is a lot easier for the above reason. So yes, there are always going to be some people who'll opt for a JD due to their personal proclivities and circumstances, but there's a good reason why many would have to drop it even if they were otherwise interested to pursue the course.

Americans don't have this rigid view and both institutions are so old that historically can mean anything from a hundred years to twenty years. If you want your answer, look at the Supreme Court and look at US presidents. Both law schools are equally represented in the corridors of power and both hire each others' JDs. But one is smaller and harder to get into. Alumni of both places do very well depend on who they cultivate.

This comment would have been true if this was 2010. It’s not the same case anymore. Plus a lot of Indians not only from t-1 nlus but also from Stephen’s, IITs and SRCC apply for a JD after taking student loans, but lsat US is no joke. Merit comes first and sorry to say if you check every year even Rhodes schooners get rejected from H/Y/S JD programmes.

I feel as an alumni she is very less talked about and underrated. She was also the best jessup speaker and has cracked Harvard law JD- one of the most prestigious law schools in this universe. Nujs really nurtured amazing candidates around the early 2010s. Thoughts?
