NLSIU Bangalore did not disclose student rankings, cumulative percentiles, or admissions lists for their 2023 LLB entrance test. Moreover, the announcement for the NLSAT LLB exam stated an intake of 120 students. However, only 80 students were admitted. This raises serious doubts regarding the transparency and fairness of the entire admissions process. Most concerning is the absence of a provided rank list. Seems like a big cash for admissions scam to me. The matter is pending in the Karnataka HC. Their entire LLB program now suffers a lack of credibility. Unlike CLAT UG, the LLB exam is not even taken by a lot of students. On top of that, there is non transparency and possibly even favouritism in who gets into the three year program. It is baffling how this nonsense goes unabated in India’s best university? What even does the Executive Council do? Do they only stamp the Vice Chancellor’s whimsical decisions?
The cash for admissions statement can be true as most of the students that have come in this year in the 3-year LLB program, come from elite backgrounds. There is hardly anyone from middle or lower-middle-class backgrounds in contrast to the average batch compositions of BALLB.
There are two possibilities: one is that there is a cash-for-admission scam (Highly unlikely) and the 2nd is that NLS is picking students based on their family background as rich and well-connected folks have a better chance of being successful after graduation and will require less help from the University.
Not releasing the data on the number of applicants and the rank list is a very big red flag. No one knows if they have complied with the reservation quotas which in my opinion, they haven't!
There was no interview round for 2023, unlike 2022 where people from a variety of backgrounds were selected and have taken financial assistance both from the University and through scholarships/loans/part-time employment to attend.
Your theory would mean the college sat and waded through applications of shortlisted candidates to identify their profiles and likely backgrounds (which I don’t know how you’d even identify just from the basic details you put in an application form) and then sent out offers.
What’s more likely is the exam pattern favours people who come from a certain background as it involves subjective, short-answer and essay type questions which most aspiring law students are not proficient at since no other exam asks for this. It’s my theory that NLS just didn’t take people who got below a certain threshold of marks irrespective of the vacancies for whatever reason. Whether this is right or wrong is a different issue but I don’t think it’s a matter of intentional selection of only people from elite backgrounds over similarly positioned students who have done well in the exam also.
"What’s more likely is the exam pattern favours people who come from a certain background as it involves subjective, short-answer and essay type questions."
Kind of like UPSC CSE mains, or State PCS mains? Kind of like something prepared for by 10 lakh+ aspirants and with innumerable coaching material? Still, it favours people from X background.:|
But they did ask for CVs this yr and it's the same story. AIRs 55, 52 aren't offered any admission. Quite interestingly the admitted people are working people who have had tangible experience working in MNC's etc
Sudhir has also made CLAT more opaque and refused to share the full rank list with even other participating NLUs. This person should just be removed from decision making authority once and for all. Or else direct suits should be filed against him personally so that he can't take the shelter of his office and waste student money in litigation.
If a non-BALLB alum VC had done all the exact things Messiah has done to NLS, then there would probably have been a large scale in-person protest by alumni. But atleast because of Messiah, all the advantages NLS previously had due to its early establishment date have been negated.
Agreed. Sudhir is extremely whimsical and by all accounts, actively promoting the three year program to the detriment of all other batches when the three year students are clearly much less competent. Only because three year is Sudhir’s brain child.
Why is this trollish? It's an open secret. People from the admin had gone to the partners and promoted the LLB course during placements and pre placement talks
I wonder what does the executive council do? I mean all these judges and other prominent people on the council just believe the VC - who is creating absolute havoc on the university reputation and course outcomes. The flagship 5 year course is being totally ignored and even actively jeopardized just because the VC wants his brainchild LLB program and expansion plan to not fail.
Only a mass protest from the BALLB students can draw their attention which seems unlikely given the cowardice nature of the present students who can't speak a word in front of the VC.
I fear this will now be the trend. Including for PhD admissions where the whole process is subjective. That is why like NLUD conducts PhD entrance via AILET and then interview, same should be for NLUs. Wherein, CLAT PhD plus interview accordingly should be conducted.
How's the university holding an individual exam any different from NLUD holding AILET? Moreover, AILET has been very opaque from the very inception. Much more so than CLAT used to be.
With the CLAT it's atleast one exam and 26+ NLUs. Saves us money. Also gives some sort of hope. Get a rank then apply for individual interviews. Whereas currently apply individually everywhere then find out more than half of the interview candidates are alumni and all your chances are lost. End up doing PhD from a shitty DU. - My life story
A PhD level should involve interview. Can't have one without it. Make the interview marks less in comparison to the clat PhD marks. But shouldn't completely do away with it
The 40 seats are lying vacant because these are reserved category seats and those candidates either did not fulfill the minimum criteria or were not able to give the fees.
See, assuming there are 100 seats. Vertical reservation - SC-15,SC-7, OBC -27, EWS-10. This means the minimum SC candidates will be 15, maximum possible 55. Why? Because 15 is reserved for them, and 40 are Open seats. There is nothing called as General seats. 40 is open to competition. So, if an SC gets AIR 1, then 16 SC candidates will be selected.
Now, assume no SC candidate can more than the minimum 40th percentile in Part A. So, there Part B won't be checked and they won't be selected. And, there 15 SEATS WILL REMAIN VACANT. These seats cannot be transferred to General candidates.
Similarly, there is a 25% Horizontal Karnataka reservation. So, if there are very less or non qualified Karnataka candidates, the 25% SEATS WILL REMAIN VACANT. They cannot be transferred to General candidates.
So, due to these factors 40 seats are vacant.
This is not a commentary on the aptitude of candidates, but, it is a reality as the investment is of 3y, plus CLAT itself has close to 50-60k students (compared to even COMEDK which has 1 lakh applicants), so very less people are interested in giving 3y and 10 lakh rupees (yes for even SC candidates it's Rs.10lakhs) for a legal education compared to an MS or MBA.
All of what you said is completely speculative. The truth could only have been ascertained had the merit list been made public, which should always be done regardless of the exam.
That is too. However, the answer to both is the same. More transparency. Why would someone make a process deliberately more opaque unless they are to benefit from such opacity?
How is it speculative? Please go and read how reservation policy works in India. As far as transparency and publishing merit list is concerned, please when you file a PIL in Court for the merit list, also file one asking UPSC to publish the prelims answer key after the Prelims exam and not after completing the whole exam cycle (1.5y later), so that no one can question their absurd logic in selecting answers.
It is speculative because you don't have any data to support your claim and nobody can contest it either because the lists have not been made public. And your argument is basically since UPSC is being opaque in some level, therefore so must NLS, which is laughable as well as tragic.
Friends, if you did not know that this was the reason for the vacant seats, because Reserved seats cannot be transferred to General category students, and there is nothing called General category, only Open for all, then, I mean..

The university is promoting the llb batch as being “better” than the flagship ba llb in front of law firms. Can you believe an institution promoting one batch over another, to the detriment of another!? This is the VC’s impartiality - the insecurity of a possible failure of the three year course.
Yes, we can believe. It is a state university, so is behaving like one. Don't fret. Why do you think students (and their parents) prefer national universities?
You came here for jobs? Guess what- we also came here for jobs. And we don't care about your jobs at all, even if we are friends with you. I see so many of my batchmates pretending to be friends with ballb people to get resources and information. I do not even pretend to do it. I tell this on record. No one in the llb batch cares even a bit about your jobs. Get lost. The university is also on our side now.
Don’t know if this is true but heard that sudhir and others are advertising the llb batch personally by telling recruiters that they should be preferred over ba llb batch??? Is this true???
The three year LLB batch as a whole is below average tbh. Many of them are middle aged men who have failed upsc and mba exams multiple times before coming to NLS.
The LLBs do not even get their scores moderated- the ballb batch does. This has created an extreme gap wherein the admin pushes for llb people and firms when comparing see the comparison and reject the ballbs. this is how sudhir runs this cash cow.
Literally this.. Had this stupid batch done things on its own, there was no reason for any hate. But they are literally being pushed at our cost. There scores aren't moderated, and their grades are inflated as hell. Moreover, their RCC is even condoning false achievements in their CVs to get internships. And still these jerks have the audacity to brag about their stupid batch. Let me tell you one more thing - few professors here literally hate your batch and you'll get to know gradually. Your honeymoon period at NLS will end the moment Sudhir is removed. Lazy aholes from your batch like that fashion model guy are getting internships at Khaitan, etc. solely because of the fraud that your batch is doing (taking medical exemptions during end term and giving the exams later when the marking is relaxed). Imagine people who don't even read the course material, have zero publications, have not participated in other co-curricular activities like moots or ADR are getting T1 internships while the much-more hardworking Batch of 2026 will surely experience many students not getting T1 internships atleast in June. This is just, pure unfair and your batch will know its place when you're dad Sudhir leaves this University for good.
Are you alleging that your faculty are deliberately inflating the LLB grades so that their CGPA remain better than yours? That's a serious accusation, especially given the profiles of most of the faculty recruited by Sudhir.
So all the vaunted faculty you are supposed to have are just going ahead with such unethical practice? Won't that make them pretty bad examples as teachers?
NLS's 3 year LLB program is turning out to be a disaster experiment. I heard they were planning to not give them hostels as they didn't have enough space. Pictures show that the entire campus is a construction site. It is running on an ad hoc basis now with construction happening as and when needed for over 2 years. They'll need more hostels as soon as next year.
NLS will regret this LLB experiment. The LLBs are not even getting internships. Their desperation has reached such a point that they are resorting to straight up indefensible tactics to somehow secure a internship at even tier 2 and tier 3 firms. The administration is trying to save its face now. They are pushing for LLBs unfairly over the flagship program BALLB which built the institution!
The VC's ideas have begun to backfire. The LLBs stand no chance in the market, the BALLBs being systematically disadvantaged by the administration to promote LLBs, the infrastructure crumbling down, and bureaucracy within the university at all time high. He is simply trying to get to April around when his potential reappointment will be.
The administration might push for LLBs as much as it wants, their performance and CV speak. I hope the firms are smart enough to not waste their resources on experimenting with them.
i am a 3rd year ballb student at nlsiu. i have taken education loan to study. nlsiu has already increased its fees so much. i came here with the expectation of getting a job and repaying my loan. i was not very strong in english. i had to learn. my rank is also not that good as i struggled to manage things in my first year. the university gave no support.
when i came in, i didnt know that i will have to handle an entirely new course which is being given priority over us. now i have to do that too. it would be okay if they came here by deserving admission. but this news only breaks my heart. i have no privileged background and now i have to compete with already privileged people who also have disproportionate university support.
there are people in this program also with loans you know. with sick family members whose medical bills they have to foot. you know nothing about any of them really but don’t make assumptions about what other people are going through. I’m sorry you haven’t got the support you need but please don’t talk about what you actually have no clue about.
A new post/office has been created in the college only to make sure the three years get internships. The college has two other courses in addition to the flagship ba llb and the newly introduced three year batch. The college does not feel the need to promote those two courses but only the three year course. Why? Because it is the brain child of sudhir. This kind of discrimination is unknown in an university worth its salt. Nls has the the most autocratic administration it ever had. There is not even an attempt to appear fair - that is what unbridled power has done to them.
Although a new post of Placement Officer has been created to promote the batch, the SWO herself seems to be working solely to promote the interests of that batch. When you promote LLB at the cost of BALLB, you are no longer a Student Welfare Officer- you are reduced to LLB Welfare Officer.
Talking about new posts what is so funny to me is the introduction of the new college system that seems to be a flop already. Admin kept a reservation for “non BALLB” which obviously means LLB because they fraternise a lot with everyone on campus so they can get votes easily, though I don’t understand why we even talk to them, and they get CV value for this fake “position of responsibility”. I don’t think most people on campus even realise that the 4 LLB college heads are really good friends and have pulled stuns like the Israel protest. They seem to be part of one large group of friends that seem to have their foot on everything in college from SC, CoCo, Sports, College system, Journals, ASP, SHARIC and who even knows what connections they have behind closed doors. Sudhir even calls them by name and greets them first when he sees them. Blatant admin favour.
today’s BALLB gripe: having friends 😮being on good terms with their professors 😮 What’s next? How dare they take a shit in the campus toilets that nurtured greatness 😡
Knew what exactly? That firms take people through contacts? Absolutely groundbreaking insight on your part. This person's internship has nothing to do with the college since their rcc hasn't even opened applications for SAM till now. If you want to go down that route, pull up everyone who get in through other means, including the ones in your own program.
@Mods this was meant to be a website about career advice. I honestly could not care less about some stupid spat between this guy, his ex and co-intern. I get that your website gets clicks off of gossip girl law school edition but have some semblance of self-respect and keep this sort of crap off of here.

This is nothing new for a state university, such scams are common.
There are two possibilities: one is that there is a cash-for-admission scam (Highly unlikely) and the 2nd is that NLS is picking students based on their family background as rich and well-connected folks have a better chance of being successful after graduation and will require less help from the University.
