Three get death in Assam for beheading minor student

A court in Assam yesterday sentenced three people to death for abducting and beheading a Class 9 student in 2011.

Arup Dutta, the son of Anu Dutta in Jagiroad near Guwahati, was abducted by Sanjoy Chandra and Bhim Das on July 1, 2011. The third accused Mohan Teron joined them later.

They beheaded Dutta and dumped his body in a jungle in Karbi Anglong district.

Morigaon District and Sessions Judge Ikramul Hussain pronounced the verdict.

The victim’s family filed a police case in July 2011. Investigation revealed that the boy was taken to Karbi Anglong and his body was dumped in a hill in Amguri.

The boy’s father received calls for Rs.50 lakh as ransom for his release.

Police nabbed the three people after tracing the calls.

During interrogation, they admitted their involvement in the crime and police were able to recover the highly decomposed body from the Amguri hills. A DNA test confirmed the body to be of Dutta.

Public prosecutor P Dey said the court, in the over 100-page order, observed that it was a rarest of rare case as the accused had demanded ransom even after brutally killing the student.

The victim’s family expressed happiness over the verdict and said the justice done by the court would help the boy’s soul rest in peace.
