Amarchand Mangaldas topped the 2012 mergers and acquisitions (M&A) India rankings released by data provider mergermarket, in terms of advising on the biggest value M&As in 2012. In terms of the total number of M&A deals advised on, Amarchand was runners up to third-time leader Desai & Diwanji.

Amarchand’s 39 M&As were worth $20bn while Desai & Diwanji’s 43 M&As were worth $1.4bn.

Amarchand was on most of the biggest Indian transactions of the year, although the $10.5bn Sterlite-Sesa Goa merger in February contributed significantly in its value-table victory, also clinching second-spot on that table for Luthra & Luthra which did not manage to feature in the volume rankings, with its 5 deals worth $10.4bn.

A detailed analysis of the mergermarket rankings and M&A activity will follow in Mint on Friday.

Kian, Can you do a write up about PH Bathiya and Co. Not heard of them and they are obviously a large M&A player given the deals. Some contact info would also be helpful if they have a New Delhi office. Thanks

Sorry to say, but JSA and Trilegal seem to be doing rather small deals. Platinum has truly aced the quality game!!

Skadden makes half of Amarchand's revenue by doing 1/39th the amount of deals. Its a volume game in India (Legal Adviser League Table by Value). While Skadden is up there in value table, they couldn't (and also wouldn't want to) make it to the volume table.

Kian when you say M&A ranking does this include any stake purchased in a company or does it have to be of a particular percentage or amount to qualify ?

If volume is a combined measure of value & count, K Law occupying 8th position doesn't seem to add up.

Well the Amarchand deals are all about the Shroffs. Shweta Shroff gets nominated for outstanding lawyer under 40 whilst Gunjan Shah, Kalpataru Tripathy, Raghubir Menon, Jatin Aneja are the unsung deserving heroes! It's all about loving the family.

JSA at least does more for its deserving - Amit Kapur, Sumanto, Nitin, Som, Dina, Akshay.

Platinum is a mix of the promoter model with strong international law firm backing. Nihar has made a huge impact on the Indian legal market. S& R is the other firm to look out for. Niche quality outfit.

L.Viswanathan, Ashwath Rau, Santosh Janakiram, Yash Ashar are all under 40, and the nomination is for Shweta Shroff! Lol.

Re. Law Firm Observer. In the case of Raghubir Menon, it is perhaps best that he is left as an unsung hero. I dont think the legal fraternity is ready or prepared for him to turn into a singing hero...
