Exclusive: Only seven out of 196 or less than 4 per cent of examinees passed the latest Bombay Incorporated Law Society’s solicitors examination, erasing April’s temporary spike in pass rates to 7 per cent and showcasing undiminished demand for the qualification.
In the October 2011 session two out of seven candidates cleared the exam in their first attempt.
However, the most recent pass rate of 4 per cent is a return to traditional territory, after the April 2011 sessions saw 7 per cent pass – a higher rate than any reported by Legally India since December 2009.
“April 2011 exams results were a bit better then previous exams - out of 215 candidates 16 were declared successful,” confirmed Bombay Incorporated Law Society examiner in charge Dawood Mandviwala.
October 2010 witnessed an all-time reported low in pass rates, which dropped to 2 per cent (four out of 205 candidates, including two first-timers).
In April 2010 the figure was at around 6 per cent again, with 11 out of 171 lawyers having passed.
Mandviwala added that new initiatives would take place in future. “I have proposed to begin with orientation programmes and conduct seminars especially designed for articled clerks, which will give guideline and imparts in-depth knowledge of the subject in which they are to be examined.”

@aaaa: a case of sour grapes?
"Advocates and Solicitors" is a sub-title that neither Amarchand nor AZB will ever give away, Solicitors are still a big thing in Bombay
Question is, what does passing this exam allow you to do that you cannot do with an LLB and admission to the bar?
Do the solicitors get any special representation rights? before any special forums? Please enlighten me.
2. No one is saying that those who aren't solicitors are dumb. But this exam requires tremendous preparation coupled with 3 yrs of articles. Unlike LLB exams, this is a completely application based paper. You're never going to study law in depth at a stretch the way you do for solicitors. Forget the title, giving the exam is going to help you for your law practice for life, even if you don't clear it.
3. Solicitors is of phenomenal value in Bombay, not necessarily in the rest of the country.
However, please don't forget that when Cyril, Zia and all cleared solicitor's exam at that time there were no national law schools nor advanced legal education present like that of today. With the advent of five years law course coupled with Moots and internships and guest lectures, corporate law has advanced a lot. Thats why these days, even Amarchand AZB don't need solicitors as such. The NLS guys are infact better than them.
No one's saying others aren't competent, but don't take credit away from the quality of the exam, nor the merit of those who clear it.
Cyril Shroff and Bahram Vakil ARE solicitors, however.
Just clearing up common misconceptions....
Best wishes,
Kian
For a previous test paper, for example, see this link:

Or look for some articles in this category:

Best regards
Kian
And all you 5 year law hypocrites, you work in a firm which uses the 'solicitor' tag. Quit if you have the guts or walk up to your managing partner and ask him or her to drop the tag or you will drop your pants and show your not so well endowed body off....biatch.
There is a saying in hindi - jis thali mein khata hain usi me ched karta hain.
Padron ym Enlishg, it's not as good as yours.
If I dare say, please file a petition in the Supreme Court of India with instructions to disallow the privilege they give to Solicitors from taking the 'advocate on record' exam.
This is of course, subject to certain conditions. If I jog my memory correctly, as I cannot run the marathon, you need to be be a solicitor for a certain number of years before you earn the right to not take the exam and still be enrolled as an advocate on record on the Supreme Court of India.
Desi bum - chum!
however the ones who have not, donot agree that any exam can make a difference and law is all about PRACTICE PRACTICE coupled with skill....I'm taking the exam in October IA... whatever be the passing rate!!....
