The Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) was established in 2006 to satisfy the need of having a centre of excellence in legal studies in the richest state in the country. It conducted its first entrance examination in July 2006 and classes began in September. Prof G.I.S Sandhu joined as the registrar. It performed the stupendous feat of conducting a sterling moot court competition of international repute, the Law Asia moot court competition, in the very first year of its establishment. In the subsequent years, it went on to become one of the premier mooting law schools of the nation. It has organized the commonwealth moot court competition and the prestigious Bar Council Of India Moot.

The Rajiv Gandhi National University Of Law Library, is one of the best law libraries in the country of India. The Library at the RGNUL has acquired a collection of over 20000 Volumes covering a wide range of general and special subjects consisting of text books, reference books, volumes of journals, reports etc. apart from the current legal periodicals. The RGNUL Library at present subscribes 45 Law Journals and about 25 magazines. Apart from the subscription to law journals, 15 Newspapers and Online journals are also being subscribed by the RGNUL Library for keeping the students and faculty in touch with the current affairs. Apart from these two, separate reading rooms have been marked for the undergraduate students and for the Post graduate students
