Dr.Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University,(RMLNLU) was established by an Act of Govt.of Uttar Pradesh in 2005, (U.P.Act No.28 of 2005) and is situated in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh. It started functioning in 2006 offering B.A. LL.B. The initial intake of B.A. LL.B. was 80 but it was doubled to 160 in the year 2008. The university also offers LL.M. and Ph.D. courses.

History

Dr.Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, was established by an Act of Govt.of Uttar Pradesh in 2005, U.P.Act No.28 of 2005 and came into being on 4th of January 2006 to meet up the new challenges in legal field and to strengthen the vision that was given by the establishment of first National Law School of the country. Originally incorporated as ‘Dr.Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law Institute, Uttar Pradesh’ word ‘Institute’ was substituted by the ‘University’ later, vide an amendment in the Act in November’2006.This was done to give a comprehensive national character to the Institute on lines with the other premier National Law Universities of the Country.<ref>[1]</ref>

The Objectives of the University

To advance and disseminate learning and knowledge of law and legal processes and their role in national development;

To develop in the student and research scholar a sense of responsibility to serve socirty in the field of law by developing skills in regard to advocacy, Judicial and other legal services, legislation, law reforms in the existing laws and the like;

To organise lectures, seminars, symposia and conferences, to promote legal knowledge and to make law and legal process efficientinstrument of ocial development;<ref>[2]</ref>

Location

Located in the South-West part of the Lucknow City, the University has 40 acres of sprawling campus in LDA’s Kanpur Road Scheme. The Campus is a complete township having accommodation facilities for 1500 students and over 100 number of teaching and non-teaching staff members. Distance from Amausi airport is 3.0 kilometres and from Lucknow railway station is nearly 7 kilometres. Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences and Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University are the other neighbouring educational institutes of higher education. The District Court, High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, Lucknow Bench, Vidhan Sabha, Tribunals, are all in the radius of 10 kms.<ref>[3]</ref>

Vice Chancellor

Prof. Balraj Chauhan is the Vice Chancellor of the University. He is a distinguished academician and administrator with vast national and international experience. A recipient of several fellowships and awards including the Commonwealth Foundation Fellowship, 2001, Prof. Chauhan specialises in Criminal Law, Law of Evidence, Criminology and Clinical Legal Education. Prior to his present position, he was a Director of National Law Institute University, Bhopal. He was also in Lucknow University where he held the office of the Director, Legal Affairs. Besides this, he has been a member of U.P. State Law Commission, U.P. State Legal Services Authority and several high-level legal, administrative and academic committees and commissions.<ref>[4]</ref> Recently he has been elected as Executive Member of the Shastri- Indo Canadian Institute, New Delhi and a member of Presidium of Asian Society of Asian Society of Criminology.<ref>[5]</ref>

Admissions

Initially, the university had its own Entrance Examination for admission to the five years integrated Law Courses. From 2008, RMLNLU became a part of the Organizing Committee of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), a national level entrance test for admissions to the most of the National Law Schools in India. Students seeking admission have to write the CLAT and the admissions are based on the rankings of the CLAT. The Test applies to both LLB and LLM admissions.

Infrastructure

The university is spread over 40 acres. It is a fully residential university, with separate halls of residences for boys and girls and residences for staff and faculty of the university.The administrative block, housing faculty's chambers and other offices and the academic block housing the classrooms are centrally air conditioned. It also houses a guest house for visitors of the university.

Halls of Residence

The university has two halls of residence for boys having 240 rooms each and one hall of residence for girls. The rooms are spacious and well ventilated and alloted on dual accommodation. Each hall has it's own separate mess and common room with a television having dish connection.

Library

Dr. Madhu Limay Library” houses a good collections of printed legal materials, and provides access to numerous online databases and internet sources which serves the legal research needs of the Students and Faculty. The reading section is divided in three parts i.e. General Reading section, Reference & Journal Section and Magazine section. The library is a two floor centrally air-conditioned building. The ground floor has Digital Lab of 56 client-server based computers, issue/return counter, Round table Room and Video conferencing room. The Chamber of Librarian and Asst Librarian are also on the ground floor. The first floor has Reading sections, separate faculty reading section and photocopy counter. Library provides Online Public Access Catalogue (Web-OPAC), article indexing services. The Web-OPAC can be accessed through http://192.168.1.3:8080/opac within LAN service of the University. Library remains closed only on the three national holidays.Library housekeeping services are automated through LIBSYS Library automation software. In addition, wireless Internet access is available throughout the library. The library has state-of-the-art facilities and also employs CD-ROM. A new service of books content sources has been introduced in the library which can be accessed through Web-OPAC. <ref>[6]</ref>

Internet Infrastructure

The whole university campus is covered by wireless internet network, secured by cyberoam technology software. Besides there is a digital lab consisting of 56 server-client based computers, which is housed in the library. The university also subscribes to legal databases like Manupatra, SCC Online, Lexis Nexis etc.

Moot Court Hall

The moot court hall of the University can be said to be the best looking and technically most advanced moot court hall in the country.

Seminar Hall and Auditorium

The University has a seminar hall with a sitting capacity of 300. The University organizes most of the functions in the seminar hall. It has all the audio-video and presentation facilities. The upcoming auditorium with a capacity of 3500 persons will be the largest auditorium of the city.

Guest House

The University has a fully furnished guest house offering the best facilities to the guests. At one point of time it can accommodate more than 60 persons. It has some VVIP and VIP suites also.

Sports and Health Care Centre

The university has a sports complex housing a wooden badminton court, a gym and facilities for table tennis. There are courts for volleyball, basketball and a football field. An olympic size swimming pool is also coming up soon.

The university premises also house a dispensary with a full time residential doctor. An ambulance is also available around the clock.

Commercial Complex

The University is planned in such a manner that the things of daily use could be available to all the persons in the campus itself. It has a small shopping complex in which shops for stationary, general items and a food corner are available.
