National Law Institute University (NLIU) Bhopal was established in 1998 by an enactment of the State Legislature of Madhya Pradesh in 1997.

The University is situated in eco-friendly surroundings on Bhadbhada Road at the outskirts of Bhopal near the Kerwan Dam, according to the college website.<ref>NLIU website - About Us</ref> "The campus is surrounded with hills and lush greenery and the city is easily accessible. The NLIU has been allotted 40 acres of land on a hillock by the Government of Madhya Pradesh to develop a modern campus with modern academic and residential facilities."
