National Law Institute University (NLIU) Bhopal was established in 1998 by an enactment of the State Legislature of Madhya Pradesh in 1997.

The University is situated in eco-friendly surroundings on Bhadbhada Road at the outskirts of Bhopal near the Kerwan Dam, according to the college website.<ref>NLIU website - About Us</ref> "The campus is surrounded with hills and lush greenery and the city is easily accessible. The NLIU has been allotted 40 acres of land on a hillock by the Government of Madhya Pradesh to develop a modern campus with modern academic and residential facilities."

The university admits only 80 undergraduates per year through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The combined B.A., LL.B (Hons.) degrees require completing 15 trimesters.

Degrees offered

The post-graduate course offered at the university is the LL.M. degree. Currently ranked third by the India Today rankings of law colleges in the country[citation needed], NLIU was modeled on the lines of the earlier established National Law School of India University at Bangalore. The patron of the university is the Hon. Chief Justice of India and the university works closely with the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, as well as the neighboring National Judicial Academy.
