J Sagar Associates (JSA)

J Sagar Associates, which is commonly known as JSA, is an Indian law firm. It was founded by Jyoti Sagar in 1991 and later Berjis Desai joined the firm on April 1, 2003 starting the Mumbai office. The firm now has offices in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi.

The founding partners have a clear vision about the structure of the law firm. They say JSA is not a personality driven firm but a merit backed partnership. Some of JSA's clients include Pepsi, Saint-Gobain, McCormick Inc.(US based spice manufacturer)<ref> | JSA racks up second American client macula buy $ 115m </ref> and Aircel. <ref> help Aircel raise 3G funds through $449m commercial papers </ref>

The firm is structured into nine clearly defined practice areas and practice chairs which coordinate the work.


Management Strategy

Men may come and men may go but JSA must go on forever sums up the belief of the founding partners. The retirement age of the partners is fixed and the firm has a stringent partnership framework. <ref> | Bar & Bench interview</ref>

To help ensure that the firm won't be dominated or exposed to nepotism, there is a policy that two people from the same family cannot both work at the firm - the policy has lost JSA associates or partners who married another JSA lawyer.

Founding partner Jyoti Sagar in an interview said: "A key element of our structure is that we are what we call “one nation one firm”. That means we do not have different firms with different sets of Partners at geographical locations operating under the same name. We are one firm with one balance sheet, one profit and loss account and the entire partnership shares from the same kitty. We are fully and financially integrated. RSG India

RSG India in 2011 survey of law firms ranked JSA as the third best firm. It writes: "A firm that is chasing hard on the heels of the top two firms in the RSG top 40 ranking, AZB and Amarchand. RSG researchers wonder when the firm will make that leap, and feel that it is currently more a matter of perception than reality. JSA has a solid rank of senior partners that is actually lacking in the other two firms outside the top individuals, but does not seem able, as yet, to convert their profiles into market feedback."
