Background
History
The Government Law College (GLC), established in 1855, is one of the oldest centres of legal education in Asia, a pioneer in legal education. The current campus of the college is situated west of Churchgate Railway Station. Students pursing the B.L.S. LL.B. are entitled to a B.L.S. (Bachelor of Legal Science) degree on successful completion of the third year and the LL.B. degree is awarded on successful completion of five years. Students, pursuing the 3 year LL.B., who do not wish to practise as advocates, are eligible for the LL.B. (General) degree, at the successful completion of the second year

Facts & Figures
B.L.S., LL.B: This is a five-year Integrated Law Course leading to a B.L.S., LL.B. Degree. The first and the second year of this course i.e. first four semesters constitute a 'Pre - Law' course. The students pursing this course are entitled to B.L.S. (Bachelor of Legal Science) Degree on successful completion of the third year (6th semester) and on successful completion of five years (10th semester) the LL.B. Degree is awarded. - 240 Seats per year
LL.B. Degree: This is a three-year Law Course leading to the LL.B. Degree. The course structure is divided into six semesters. Students who do not wish to practise as Advocates, are eligible for the LL.B. (General) Degree, at the successful completion of the second year (4th semester). On successful completion of three years (6th semester) the LL.B. Degree is awarded. - 320 seats per year
L.L.M: The LL. M. Degree enables students to develop their interests in many of the major areas of law to which they have been introduced in the LL. B. and also provides opportunities for the study of important specialized areas. The duration of course is two years. A student is permitted to take any two groups out of the eleven groups each paper in the group shall carry 100 marks.
Postgraduate Diploma Course in Securities Law: Recognizing the growing importance of India's capital markets and in keeping with its pioneering role in Indian legal education, GLC Mumbai offers a one year Postgraduate Diploma Course in Securities Law.
Admissions
Students with an LLB degree or its equivalent, may apply. Only five students per group will be admitted on merit basis. If any of the students do not take the admission by the prescribed date, those on the waiting list will be given admission based on that order. There is no admission test.

Infrastructure
Hostels
The Government Law College has no hostel of its own. However, 62 seats for male students of the College in the Government Colleges Hostel, “C” Road, Churchgate and 20 Seats for male students at the Ismail Yusuf College at Jogeshwari, Mumbai has been provided. A good number of students also reside at the International Students Hostel, which is a stone’s throw away from the college, and at several paying guest arrangements in South Mumbai.There are two girls' hostels - Savitridevi hostel and Telang Smarak Girls hostel offer accommodation to female students of various colleges affiliated to the Mumbai University. The hostel accommodation and facilities are fair enough and in fact, very convenient for the students. For admission to the hostel, the students need to apply independently. Admission to the college DOES NOT guarantee accommodation in the hostel. With the college and hostels being situated in the heart of the city, the students practically have no great inconveniences and can find, virtually, anything and everything they require.
Library and Reading Room
The Harilal J.Kania library and Reading room on the third floor can actually boast of maximum attendance. It is a centre of great activity in GLC. The library has a massive collection of books on virtually every topic a law student would require. And the library subscribes to a large number of journals and reports.
IT Infrastructure
The Electronic Research Room (ERR) situated on the ground floor of the Annexe building of the college is a state of the art Research Room and Computer Centre. The ERR is equipped with the 10 PCs, and is extremely useful to students representing the college at various moot court and research paper competitions. The ERR also has printing facilities as well as a mini library. The ERR provides students access to the following legal databases such as Manupatra Online, Westlaw etc. These legal databases are a powerful tool for speedy, inexpensive legal research providing students with instant access to case-law, legislation and legal articles at the click of a mouse.
Extra Curricular Activities
Mooting
TBC: Write a little about how mooting in college is organised. Mooting is an integral part of student life at GLC, and the Moot Court Association co-ordinates all mooting activities at the college. Students from all batches are eligible to represent GLC in inter-collegiate moots. The most prestigious intra-college moot is the Grand Moot, which allows the final rankers to represent GLC at several elite of Indian moots. Common Eliminations are held from time to time for one or more moots, that aren't included in the Grand Moot. A unique feature of GLC mooting is that GLC does not restrict its participation to elite national moots, but also participates in smaller national moots, and even several state level and city level moots. This being in tune with the objective of giving every student a chance to moot at whatever level they are most comfortable with, mainly for the experience.

Student Activities
The Student Council is the apex student body and represents the whole student community. MCA is the committee responsible for the organisation of various moots in the college, including conducting the elimination rounds for various moots. Mooting is one of the principal activities in the college. Magazine committee is responsible for the publication of the annual college magazine me`LAWnge. Law Review Committee publishes the annual Law Review of GLC. Justice Y.V.Chandrachud. Social Service League promotes various forms of service to the society like organising slum development programs, lectures on social issues, spreading legal awareness among people, etc. Dramatics Society organises various cultural events in the college.
Recruitment
The college has an active placement committee, and approx. 42 law firms and 20 corporates visited last year for campus recruitment. Senior Counsels of the Bombay High Court too visit the college for placements. Click here to view a detailed article: [2]
