Background

School of Law, Christ University (SLCU), Bangalore, is a part of Christ University, Bangalore, which was founded and is administered by Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI). CMI, the first indigenous Catholic religious congregation of India with a membership of 2000, renders its service to humanity in educational, social, healthcare and other activities. The parent university, a premier educational institution, is an academic fraternity of individuals dedicated to the motto of excellence and service and already has a proven history of success in the field of education. Though it is a minority institution, Christ University maintains a secular in outlook towards education. Students of all castes, religions, creeds and languages are encouraged to be a part of this temple of learning.

Christ University, formerly Christ College had the rare distinction of being the first institution in Karnataka to be accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), UGC and reaccredited with an A+ in 2005 for quality education.In four decades, The Institution has become the most preferred educational institution in the city of Bangalore.

Located in a beautiful expansive campus of Christ University, Bangalore, SLCU is an institute imparting world class legal education not only to students from various parts of the country but also from the Middle East and Mauritius. SLCU boasts of unmatched infrastructure comprising of well-equipped audio-visual classrooms, resourceful libraries with the latest legal publications and journals, information center with all-time Internet connectivity, conference hall, mini-auditorium and above all, a conducive environment to study and explore numerous possibilities in life.

Number of Seats

Batches upto 2010 have 80-150 students per batch. SLCU increased its intake to 300 from the 2011 batches. The current total intake is 300 per batch.

Admissions

The All India Entrance Test (AIET) held by Christ University is the entrance Test for admission into SLCU. The test is followed by micro presentation and personal interview to shortlist candidates for the 300 seats. The test is usually held in the month of May and covers the topics of General Knowledge, Mathematical Ability, Logical reasoning, Legal reasoning and English. Infrastructure

Campus

The Bangalore Urban Arts Commission has selected Christ University for the Best Campus Award for four consecutive years, 1996 through 2000. Well-maintained gardens and buildings, air-conditioned Seminar Halls, Panel Room, Conference Hall, Assembly Hall, Terrace Garden, Auditorium, Health Club, Kiosk and all the requirements of an institution of higher learning are the unique features of our university. SLCU boasts of a 13 storey state-of-the-art building within the wast and expansive campus of CU. The glass pained building boasts of modern day design and architecture. Class rooms are equipped with audio-visual systems and seating for 60 students.

Library

Students of SLCU have access to three different library facilities, namely the General Library; the specialized Law Library and the Online Library.

The General Library offers students an excellent selection of books and magazines on all subjects. The back issues of the leading management journals, Indian as well as international, and an EBSCO database consisting of 110 the Journals and a monthly online commentary on Indian Economy through the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, are also available.

The Law School Library is spread across 4 floors containing over 55,000 books; 445 journals,7372 reports from India, Pakistan, United States, United Kingdom, Africa, EU, China etc and over 8 online resources such as JSTOR, WestLaw, Manupatra, SCC etc.

The Library works from 8 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. The library also has a good collection of audio and videotapes for use of faculty and students. All library information is already computerised, which facilitates the easy use of the library.The library provides photocopying facilities to faculty and students.<ref>[library.christuniversity.in "Library"]</ref>

Computer Labs All administrative works of the university are computerised. The four computer labs on campus are equipped with the latest Intel microprocessor-based computers. The labs have systems with the latest configurations connected to the latest servers. Laser Printers, Inkjet Printers, Digitiser, LP 735 Data Projector, Scanner, Dot Matrix Printers and other peripherals are connected to the network.

Internet Lab To integrate Information System Technology into the present curriculum, the university is one of the first educational institutions to be able to boast of Internet connectivity through 1024 KBS Primus and Cisco Router with 1MBPS Internet leased line connecting its students to the world. The faculty and the students are encouraged and to surf the net free of cost. All the departments are connected through the Internet, allowing for easier access to information.

Canteen and Kiosks The university provides a healthy environment in the cafeteria and makes sure that quality food is served at a reasonable price. The kiosk, help students refresh themselves with snacks while running between lectures.

Health Club Christ University also has a Multi Gym and Fitness Centre for both students and faculty. The well-stocked gym consists of Multi Gym, Manual Walker, ExcerCycle and Weights.

Extra Curricular Activities

Moot Courts, Client Counseling and Other Activities

Students of SLCU have made their presence felt at national and international moot court and client counseling competitions. The current faculty has experience in participating in national and international moot court competitions in training students to compete at these events and also in judging international moot court competitions.

Apart from moot courts and client counseling events, the university will be inviting eminent persons from various disciplines to address the students. The speech-writer to the Canadian Prime Minister addressed the first batch of students of Christ School of Law and an insight into the working of the Prime Ministers gave of office and speech writing for the Prime Minister. The university expects that these events will motivate those students intending to pursue careers that are considered unconventional and challenging.

SLCU hosted 2 Moot Court competitions in the 2011-2012 season. First being the SLCU National Moot Court Competition and the second being the 1st SLCU-LKS-CCI Anti Trust Moot Court Competition.

Student Activities

Over 20 different committees, ranging from Debating society, IPR, criminal law, media law, ADR, journals and publishing, films, dramatics,sports etc allow students to engage in independent work towards areas of interest beyond Law school curriculum.

Legal Aid

Christ University and School of Law both engage in providing legal aid to those in need through associations with Non-Governmental organizations; Student groups; departmental activities and committees. The Legal Aid Committee of SLCU visits rural Karnataka and has provided free legal aid and services to those requiring it.
