The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, commonly referred as M. S. University (MSU), is a university in the city of Vadodara, (Baroda) in Gujarat state, India. Originally known as the Baroda College of Science (established 1881), it became a university in 1949 after the independence of the country and later renamed after its benefactor Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the former ruler of Baroda State. It is a teaching and residential university. It is the only university in Gujarat whose medium of instruction is English for all courses. India Today has ranked the university at tenth place in their list of India's best universities.[1] while Hindustan Times has ranked it at the Sixth Place.

Background

History

The Faculty of Law, M. S. University, Baroda has been a premier law institute in Gujarat since the sixties. The varied academic talent of the faculty is capable to tackle the emerging legal trends. It offers various courses like B.A.LL.B. (Five Years Integrated Law Degree Course), LLB (General) , LLB (Special) ,LLM (Business Law), LLM (Criminal Law), Post Graduate Diploma in Taxation Practice, Post Graduate Diploma in Labour Practice , Post Graduate Diploma in Cyber Law, Post Graduate Diploma in Human Rights, and PhD. program.

In 2005, Faculty of Law has started 'Baroda School of Legal Studies' (BSLS), which shall impart Five Years Integrated Law Course. This is a course after 12th standard; which shall open a new and a novel career option for the students.

This course aims to chisel out bright and brilliant lawyers out of raw teenagers. The age of Globalization and liberalization has totally changed the face of legal profession creating a huge demand of corporate lawyers in India and abroad. And to answer this need of changing times, the law institutions are coming forward to cope-up with this changing scenario. And at such a time how can the globally recognized University like the M S University lag behind? Starting of BSLS is a constructive step in this direction.

Location

The Faculty of Law is located in the Maharaja Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad Parisar Campus of the Maharaja Sayajirao University; which is right opposite to the University Head Office, in Fatehganj, Vadodara.

Every year, the total number of students of the the First Semester of the Five Years Integrated Law Course shall not exceed 80.

Admissions

Candidates who have obtained a minimum of 45% in their HSC Examination (10+2) [40% for SC/ST Students) are eligible to apply. They must NOT HAVE COMPLETED 20 years of age on the first day of July in the year of admission. There shall then be a Written Examination of 200 marks, which shall assess the aptitude of the candidate to pursue law as a career, his capacity to express in English, and General awareness. This shall be followed by a Personal Interview.

Infrastructure

Hostels

The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda has one of the largest Hostel Campuses in the western India . 12 Boys Hostels and 4 Girls Hostels are spread over the area of approximately 100 acres.

  • Total approximate accommodation in Girls Hostels: 1300 Students
  • Total approximate accommodation in All Hostels: 3800 Students

All the students residing in the hostels are provided with minimum facilities like a bed, a cupboard, a table and a chair in the room individually. All the hostels are equipped with automatic gas fired hot water boilers facility, which provides hot water during the winter season. Hostels are also equipped with a dining hall, a common hall , gym, Mike system facility etc. Currently (June 2012), renovation of the Hostels is underway, to make it state of the art.

Library and Reading Room

Shrimati Hansa Mehta Library, the University Library of M S University of Baroda was established on May1, 1950. At the time of establishment of the M. S. University of Baroda, a collection of 25,000 books belonging to the two State Libraries (Huzur Political Office and Secretariat Library) was handed over to the University Library. There were several colleges in Baroda - Baroda College (for Arts), Science Institute, Commerce College, and Secondary Teacher’s Training College etc. These colleges had libraries of their own. These libraries continued to remain as Faculty Libraries and were administered independently. Thus the University Library System was established on 1-5-1950, which was housed in the central block of Old Residency Office Building.

The Faculty of Law also holds its own library comprising of books of all areas of law. It also subscribes to various journals, e-journals and magazines.

IT Infrastructure

The students can avail internet facility on Desktop Computers at the University Computer Centre. The Library of the college is Wi-Fi enabled.

Extra Curricular Activities

Mooting

Every year, Baroda School of Legal Studies hosts Lux et Veritas, their law fest where law students from all over the country converge and come on one platform. The law fest consists of several events such as the prestigious Lux et Veritas National Moot Court Competition, National Client Counseling Competition, Drafting Competition and Students' National Law Conference, among others. Dignitaries such as Ujjwal Nikam, sitting judges and former judges of the Gujarat High Court and other High Courts have been a part of Lux et Veritas.

Lux et Veritas 2010 took place from October 1 to October 3.

Apart from Lux et Veritas, the Faculty regularly holds intra class moot courts to strengthen the mooting skills of the students.

The students of the Faculty have several awards like Winners, Runners-up, Best Mooter, and Best Memorial, at several National Moot Court Competitions in the country.

The student management body is called the Maharaja Sayajirao University Union. Its structure is as follows.
