Background

History

Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies has been striving towards improving standards of Legal Education in the country. In the process, the college continues to conduct Moot Court Competitions at the national level, organize legal aid programmes for the common man, legal awareness camps and client counseling. The college also arranges for visits to Lok Adalats, the Hon'ble High Court, the Hon'ble Supreme Court and the Parliament.

As an amalgamation of students from every nook and corner of our country, the institution continues to produce lawyers of the highest standards. This fact has been acknowledged by several research organizations including India Today (need we say more) which has ranked the college as the seventh best among the top ten law colleges in India. The college has been ranked the seventh best Law College for three years in a row by India Today for the years 2003, 2004 and 2005 respectively.

Every institution has a past, present and future. Unimaginable and insurmountable efforts have to be put in to start an institution. It is only with the divine blessings of the omnipresent Almighty that we have risen to where we are today despite a very humble beginning.

Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies was inaugurated on 2nd August, 1993 by Sri B V Acharya, the then Advocate General, Government of Karnataka. Dr. V.B. Coutinho, the then Dean and Principal of University Law College, Bangalore presided over the function. The college was started in a very humble manner comprising of a modest library, with a few students. Little did the college realize that the college would scale such heights.

Sri G.V. Subba Rao assumed office as the First Principal of the college. Subsequently, Prof. Anand Rao of the Department of English served as the acting Principal for a short term. On 10th July, 1996, Prof. S.S. Alur was appointed as Principal. His arrival as Principle galvanized the growth and development of the college. His commendable contribution to the college in terms of his insight, treasure trove of knowledge, guidance and uncanny expertise has brought this institution to where it is today. Prof. Alur was the backbone and pillar strength to this esteemed institution. Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies has been obtained approval by the Government of Karnataka, affiliation to Bangalore University and is also recognized by the Bar Council of India, New Delhi.

In quick succession, Prof S.S. Alur was designated as the Director and on 23rd February, 2000 Smt. C.S. Kanthi assumed office as the Principal of the college. Owing to personal reasons, she passed on the baton to Prof. S.B. Jatti who was appointed as the Principal on the 26th of September, 2001. Under his dynamic leadership, the untiring and ceaseless efforts of the dedicated faculty, the committed students and above all the ever-willing and supportive Management, the college continues to tread the path of excellence.

Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies (BILS) is located inside the Vijaya College campus in South-Central Bangalore’s Basavanagudi area. Innumerable BMTC buses connect BILS to all parts of the city and the ongoing construction work of Namma Metro right outside the college campus means excellent accessibility once the Metro gets going.

Infrastructure

Hostels

A hostel exclusively for women within the campus offers a safe sanctuary for the young women students. A North Indian and South Indian cuisine in the hostel cafeteria offers comfort food.

Library and Reading Room

Classrooms are decent but the library appears a bit too small. However, since it has all the books that students want, they don’t really complain about it The library at this law college in Bangalore houses various sections for text books, journals and magazines. The reference and circulation system at the college is user friendly for both students and faculty. The library is equipped with an internet connection that increases the reference network available to the students. The library is affiliated to the library at National Law School of India University affording the students a much wider arena of volumes to refer and study from.

IT Infrastructure

Although the Vijaya College campus is humungous, it’s cluttered with numerous blocks with Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies (BILS) being allotted just one floor of a small block to the right. Classrooms are decent but the library appears a bit too small. However, since it has all the books that students want, they don’t really complain about it. A sports ground and a basketball court is common for all students of the Vijaya College campus which conducts various courses like B.Com, BBM, B.Sc. and a PU College as well.

Extra Curricular Activities

Mooting

TBC: Write a little about how mooting in college is organised.

Student Activities

"Legal Aid Cell - Societal Accountability".

To quote Justice P.N. Bhagwati " Legal aid means providing an arrangement in the society so that machinery of administration of justice becomes easily accessible and is not denied by reason of poverty, illiteracy etc".

Our students' keen involvement in this sphere echoes the above purpose. BILS students have been visiting villages every year in and around Bangalore to provide Legal aid to the needy. This has received much acknowledgement from the Karnataka Legal Aid Services Authority. BILS has a active Legal aid Cell which conducts Legal Literacy Programmes to students at the undergraduate level.

Recruitment

A lot of students who opt for practice immediately after graduation are placed with some help from the college. Many others though go for higher education. Placements are mostly into corporate firms and very few manage to get into litigation. Placement figures have escalated since the previous few years.

Seminars and Conferences

TBC

Academia and faculty

Notable faculty

One of the biggest plus points of Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies (BILS) is its excellent faculty. Communication is in English and teachers are approachable and friendly. A few exceptions are always there to take a toll on the students, but people here are more or less happy. “Some of our professors are also guest lecturers at NLS”

Journals and publications

TBC - add student published journals, as well as notable publications by faculty.

Subjects available

TBC: Which subjects can you take? Which are optional or compulsory? Feel free to add professors teaching each subject or whatever else is worth mentioning.

Alumni

TBC: How many alumni approximately does the college have? Is there a formal and organised network?

Notable alumni

TBC: List some alumni who have made a mark in the profession or gone on to do interesting things.
