Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co

Amarchand Mangaldas is an Indian law firm with headquarters in Delhi and Mumbai.

There are law firms in India and then there is Amarchand Mangaldas. It is the biggest and arguably most well-known Indian law firms by clients, the industry and students. The firm’s client roster includes almost every large Indian corporate and it has one of the widest national footprints, having opened new offices in Chennai, Ahmedabad and Pune in 2012<ref>India: LI-Mint Exclusive: Rs 1000cr Amarchand BCG plan revealed,analysed</ref>, as well as an aggressive growth strategy until 2017.

The Shroff brothers – Cyril and Shardul - use the “bicycle” model to explain their management structure: one wheel represents the family partners, and the other represents the non-founder family, and both wheels are co-dependent and working in unison. The aim of this approach is that the family will continue to have a vital role in the firm’s future while continuing to grow and give opportunities to non-family firm’s professionals.

Management Strategy

The masterplan for Amarchand’s next phase of growth as chalked out by BCG highlights a plan for Rs.1000 crore turnover, 100 partners and some 1000 lawyers. The conclusion of the five year plan coincides with the firms 100th birthday and the key points if implemented will surely give Amarchand the undisputed market leadership.

The plan makes a concerted effort to reduce the personality-driven image of the firm to a level playing field, partly by reducing the equity held by the Shroff family.

The Shroff brothers these days present a united front, with little external sign of disruptive family politics that was once the gossip in legal circles. Some observers say the BCG project drew the family closer, with the realisation that good relations between Delhi and Mumbai are indispensable to the firm’s business.

Careers

To hit the 1,000 lawyer headcount target by 2017, Amarchand will need a net increase of roughly 100 lawyers and around 10 partners per year. As such, Amarchand has been the single biggest law firm recruiter from Indian law schools in the past few years, as well as absorbing a large number of laterals – on the flipside, Amarchand has also proved a training ground and stepping stone to many lawyers’ careers moving to other firms or companies. The starting salary offered by Amarchand Mangaldas was around Rs 10.48 lakh per year in 2011, increasing to up to Rs 14-15 lakh per year with bonus. The campus recruitment numbers show their efforts in order to achieve this target. At the same time they want to recruit foreign qualified lawyers and the best talent available in the country.

Internships

A fourth year student of School of Law, Christ University claimed in an Lawctopus internship review on 27th January,2012 that an internship with AMSS was a great learning experience and one of the best in India. But the anonymous reviewer also added on a cautionary note that the work environment was one for workaholics. The hours were long but interns were given good work and were also looked after. Even if the team an intern was assigned to had no work, other teams ensured that the interns were kept busy.<ref>internship survey</ref>

The firm has a policy to pay students only who apply through college placement committee. Though some disagree and say that if the student is exceptional the firm does consider paying them.
