Long hours, no stipend and lots of work. Well clearly money does not always make the difference as the internship gets a rating of 8/10 on student website Lawctopus. One needs contacts in order to get the internship, says the reviewer. All research work for interns, before assigning a topic they do not care if you have studied it before or not.

"Benefiting from India's infrastructure boom, the firm acted on more project finance deals by value than any other firm globally in 2009. In addition to its top level finance work, the firm also has full corporate practice known for its quality. The firm is Delhi-based and the absence of top partners in Mumbai means its profile suffers to some degree. Like many of the top firms, clients say they need the managing partner, Rajiv Luthra, on complex matters."
The firm handles the concomitant IP issues associated with M&A,
and also regularly represents clients in copyright and patent litigation."

Khaitan & Co, first established in 1911 in Calcutta, is an Indian law firm with offices in Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.

Khaitan & Co completed a century in November 2011 making it one of the oldest firms in the country. The firm has continuously reinvented itself at every step in order to survive this long period. Particularly the 2001-established Mumbai office has lifted Khaitan & Co into one of the few corporate law firms regularly competing on big ticket work - Legal 500 has ranked Khaitan Mumbai's corporate and M&A practice in Tier 1.

The founder of the firm, Debi Prasad Khaitan, was a member of the Constituent Assembly, making the history of the firm an illustrious one, as documented in a 500-odd-page coffee table book biography of the firm that was launched on its centenary.

Even though the Britishers dominated most business and legal practice when KCo started, the firm was one of the few that helped budding entrepreneurs like GD Birla. Khaitan & Co and the Birlas ended up growing together.

Management Strategy
The firm is run by an executive committee elected by the partners. This aims to ensure that the firm is run professionally and not dominated by the family. Although much of the Khaitan and related families still play a large role in the firm, it has witnessed some loss by family partners walking out and setting up individual practices under various derivative Khaitan brandnames.

Mumbai has been the strategic driver of Khaitan & Co's national growth in the last decade. In the three years up to April 2012, Khaitan & Co hired a whopping 18 lateral partners, many from abroad. Mumbai worked on expanding the footprint in Delhi, starting with Bharat Anand Anand joining from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in 2009, followed by others. In Bangalore former Amarchand Mangaldas partner Ganesh Prasad joined in 2012 to also focus on expanding the firm's influence to Chennai and Hyderabad.

Careers
Starting salary at Khaitan & Co is 10.8 lakh.

Khaitan & Co has become one of India's larger law firm campus recruiters. Recruitment figures for Khaitan in the year 2010-11 were:.
The Mumbai office is spearheading the Kolkata firm's recent success and it recently moved onto a floor in Lower Parel's new Indiabulls centre. They regularly appear at or near the top of Mergermarket's M&A deals tables, and clients also recommend their capital markets practice. It is one of the more modern firms at the top end of the market."
AZB & Partners is not an old-school firm by any stretch, having merged into what is now known as AZB in 2004, yet it has managed to create a certain dominance in the Indian corporate legal market. Indeed, the named partners Ajay Bahl, Zia Mody and Bahram Vakil, have built an M&A powerhouse that is engaged in almost every other big ticket deal. The legal services rendered by the firm cover the corporate, commercial, regulatory, financial and tax planning aspects of businesses.

Some of AZB's big name clients include the Tatas, HDFC, Bharti-Airtel and Reliance, as well as a cross-section of global and domestic private equity funds.

The firm's three founding partners also co-own a legal process outsourcing (LPO) joint venture with Patni Computers, called Bodhi Global.

Firm's history
After shifting her base from New York to Mumbai, Zia Mody started her litigation practice under the name CZM (Chambers of Zia Mody) in 1978. For the next 10 years she wore her band and gown to court but then started getting tired of all the adjournments. The Indian economy was opening up at that point and she started getting a lot of referrals from her friends abroad, advising people who wanted to invest in India. Bahram Vakil, who knew Zia from their time in New York, decided to join hands with her and start a partnership in 2001, changing the name to CZB. Both of them realized the need to increase operations and start an office in Delhi, which brought in AZB's A, Ajay Bahl. Coincidentally, Ajay Bahl had interned with Soli Sorabjee, Zia's father, before he started his practice from his garage at Malcha Marg. In 2004 the three future AZB founders sat down and worked out the details of the partnership but there was no official document.citation

In 2009, AZB brought on board Bangalore firm Anup Shah and Associates with a specialization in real estate. The aim was to allow AZB to increase its presence in South India with offices in Hyderabad and Chennai. However, after one-and-a-half years Anup Shah's firm and AZB parted ways, partly because of conflicts caused by Shah's strength in real estate and AZB's portfolio of corporate client instructions. But both said they would remain 'best friends' in order to leverage each others core practice areas.

Short-lived international best friendship
AZB and Clifford Chance entered into a best friend relationship in January 2009. Clifford Chance said at the time that it had hoped to enter into the Indian market if it liberalised in several years, and for cross-border mergers Clifford Chance believed it was essential to have a tie-up with a top Indian firm. A strong incentive for AZB was that Clifford Chance would provide its lawyers with Clifford Chance in-house training and soft skill courses.

In 2011, both firms broke off their best friend relationship; they said they would remain "good friends". The firms pulled the plug on the relationship because they both saw fewer referrals than expected and the chances of the Indian legal market liberalising had become negligible.

Important Deals
Careers
Historically, AZB has focused less on direct campus visits and recruitment than other large Indian law firms, instead preferring to offer jobs via pre-placement offers (PPOs). However, in recent years, AZB has increasingly been visiting law school campuses, though it still recruits lower numbers directly from campus than other firms of a comparable size.

Starting Salary of AZB in Mumbai is 11.4 lakh with a competitive bonus and 9.8 lakh in Delhi.
Mumbai office
The Nariman Point office ensures the interns enjoy freedom and still get an insight into the firms working culture, stated an internship review on student website Lawctopus. The associates are friendly and extremely approachable. They also appreciate an intern’s opinion about a legal issue. There is autonomy however monitored by deadlines. An intern if serious can really engage in the work at the firm.

One should apply 5 to 6 months before the desired period of internship by emailing at recruitment.mumbai@azbpartners.com.

Bangalore Office
Good work, great location and decent hours, said a reviewer. The workload depends on the team one is working with. But interns are not officially assigned to any team and have the liberty to ask anyone in the office for work. Though this may lead to no systematic workflow, the interns end up enjoying a variety of work. Stipend: Rs 2,500. It writes: "The three named partners are all well-respected, although in Mumbai Zia Mody still has a powerful profile. However, there is evidence that some of the younger lawyers are getting recognised by clients who are increasingly happy to instruct them, with Zia supervising from a distance."
Legal 500
Legal 500 writes: "AZB & Partners’ ‘responsive and very commercial’ service represents corporates and banks on a range of financings. The team has
also acted on various Mumbai-led capital
markets transactions, including IPOs and bond issuances, for both issuers and underwriters.

"The ‘excellent’ team at AZB & Partners advised Bharti Airtel its $10.7bn acquisition of the pan-African operations of Zain from MTC Telecommunications. It also acted for Vedanta Resources on acquiring a controlling interest in Cairn India. Other clients include Reliance Industries, JFE Steel Corporation and Fortis Healthcare.
Amarchand Mangaldas is an Indian law firm with headquarters in Delhi and Mumbai.

There are law firms in India and then there is Amarchand Mangaldas. It is the biggest and arguably most well-known Indian law firms by clients, the industry and students. The firm’s client roster includes almost every large Indian corporate and it has one of the widest national footprints, having opened new offices in Chennai, Ahmedabad and Pune in 2012, as well as an aggressive growth strategy until 2017.

The Shroff brothers – Cyril and Shardul - use the “bicycle” model to explain their management structure: one wheel represents the family partners, and the other represents the non-founder family, and both wheels are co-dependent and working in unison. The aim of this approach is that the family will continue to have a vital role in the firm’s future while continuing to grow and give opportunities to non-family firm’s professionals.

Management Strategy
The masterplan for Amarchand’s next phase of growth as chalked out by BCG highlights a plan for Rs.1000 crore turnover, 100 partners and some 1000 lawyers. The conclusion of the five year plan coincides with the firms 100th birthday and the key points if implemented will surely give Amarchand the undisputed market leadership.

The plan makes a concerted effort to reduce the personality-driven image of the firm to a level playing field, partly by reducing the equity held by the Shroff family.

The Shroff brothers these days present a united front, with little external sign of disruptive family politics that was once the gossip in legal circles. Some observers say the BCG project drew the family closer, with the realisation that good relations between Delhi and Mumbai are indispensable to the firm’s business.

Careers
To hit the 1,000 lawyer headcount target by 2017, Amarchand will need a net increase of roughly 100 lawyers and around 10 partners per year. As such,
Amarchand has been the single biggest law firm recruiter from Indian law schools in the past few years, as well as absorbing a large number of laterals – on the flipside, Amarchand has also proved a training ground and stepping stone to many lawyers’ careers moving to other firms or companies.
The starting salary offered by Amarchand Mangaldas was around Rs 10.48 lakh per year in 2011, increasing to up to Rs 14-15 lakh per year with bonus.
The campus recruitment numbers show their efforts in order to achieve this target. At the same time they want to recruit foreign qualified lawyers and the best talent available in the country.
Internships
A fourth year student of School of Law, Christ University claimed in an Lawctopus internship review on 27th January,2012 that an internship with AMSS was a great learning experience and one of the best in India. But the anonymous reviewer also added on a cautionary note that the work environment was one for workaholics. The hours were long but interns were given good work and were also looked after. Even if the team an intern was assigned to had no work, other teams ensured that the interns were kept busy.

The firm has a policy to pay students only who apply through college placement committee. Though some disagree and say that if the student is exceptional the firm does consider paying them.
