MPL 2 Quicklinks:
The moot acted as a practice session for the teams participating in the [[Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, Vienna|Willem C. Vis Moot, Vienna]] and the [[Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot, Hong Kong|Willem C. Vis (East), Hong Kong]], which are Tier 1 moots in the MPL Season 2 sponsored by Allen & Overy.
The pre moot, a first of its kind in India, was jointly organized by [[NUJS Kolkata]] and [[Nalsar Hyderabad]] last weekend. The NUJS team for Vienna consisted of Smaran Shetty, Karan Talwar, Rishabh Goenka and the NUJS team for Hong Kong had Nihal Joseph, Abhijnan Jha and Aditya Alok. Pooorvi Satija, Puneeth Nagraj from Nalsar and John Raghav, Arya Trivedi from HNLU finished semi-finalists.
The NUJS Vienna team (pictured) won a prize money of Rs 1,00,000/- which was sponsored by Bharucha & Partners, Mr. Anirudh Wadhwa and the NUJS Moot Court Society. The final round was adjudged by an arbitration panel which was presided by Veeraraghavan Inbavijayan, a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators who has presided as a sole arbitrator in over 750 domestic cases and five international cases in South Asia. Successful ex-Vis mooters Shreya Parikh, Zehaan Trivedi, Deepak Raju, Shatadru, Rukmini Das and Sneha J judged the preliminary rounds.
Ramanuj Mukherjee and Deepak Raju from NUJS along with Poorvi Satija and Shreya Parikh from Nalsar conceived and planned the organization of the pre moot in India. They intend this to be an annual affair from now on with NUJS and Nalsar alternatively hosting the event. Due to the delayed decision to organize the pre moot this year, only seven teams from across the national law universities and law colleges of the country could take part.

Next we shall see how the scientifically designed noojie breakfast menu has decided their jessup success.
There are other law schools too you know, but what the heck, they are spurned lovers of LI
You heard it here first...
i sometimes wonder if the site should be called legally NUJS! kian, it was a bit more than an intra, organized by NUJS and NALSAR for their internal benefits. the law student community at large didn't have a stake associated with it.
1. Vis is coming and this is a nice build-up story to it...
2. This is only a blog, not a news story.
3. This moot is not part of the MPL and there are no points for it.
4. When in MPL Live we interview a winning mooter how is it different from writing briefly about a moot that 7 good mooting colleges took place in to prepare themselves for one of the biggest moots in the world? How does that not warrant a story? Are IPL practice games not covered in the run up to a big match?
5. Nalsar and NUJS are the two top teams to beat in the MPL right now: of course what they do will get covered at this stage. And how they perform at Vis, if at all, could very well decide the winner of the MPL.
Best wishes,
Kian
try doing something worthwhile and see if it gets you attention.
Legally india is sour, huh?
And it was the first ever pre-moot for Vis in India. Why shouldn't it be covered as a blog post?
Proactive colleges are bound to be covered more because of their proactivity!
Wordsworth hath spoken !!!!
Nujs is the most proactive college on planet ! no one shall question that !
A pox on any further accusations of a LI NUJS love affair !
As Keats has said,
" A proactive noojie is a joy forever..."
Further, apart from NUJS judges, there were judges from NALSAR, GNLU and NLSIU.
I think your criticism is uncalled for.
and for all those who are jealous, may god help you
you may think that a practice moot is not a big deal, but pre-moots in case of Vis (which does not have national rounds) are extremely helpful as they give the participants an opportunity to evaluate their performance and improve it.
further, you may want to check out www.cisg.law.pace.edu/cisg/moot/pre-moots.html for more info on this. and the bit on Kolkata after NALSAR on the site has been mentioned as the Pre-Moot was organized in Kolkata this time - so, there is no big deal or the least "noojification" about it.
also, the judging was organised in a manner that minimized bias. for instance, none of the NUJS teams were judged by any of the NUJS judges for the Preliminary Rounds.
this gets better and better
noojie!!
And for those NOOBS who thought this was worthy of being reported on this site, at least take the effort of getting the name of the non noojie right: It's Arya Tripathy and not Trivedi.
Poor Person!
A Noojie is a noojie. As Shakespeare puts it "It is a bright day that brings forth the Noojie." Or "There comes a Noojie in the affairs of men which taken at the Salt Lake leads on to fortune."
Don't question Noojies. "To be or not to be a Noojie." I would prefer going to NIFT than become a NOOJIE
In the name of in the name Father-Son & Holy Spirit I command you... to stop writing about Noojies, or else we shall haunt you and all your readers again and again (PAUSE A BIT FOR DRAMATIC EFFECT..) and again....
Here you go:
When one is proactive, the contemporaries are jealous.
Now go on...enough fodder for you guys on a Sunday.
if all this effort at NUJS- bashing could have been better utilised, they too could have asked to be covered more positively.
Earlier it was NLS, now NUJS.
www.legallyindia.com/201102081781/Law-schools/nlsiu-students-take-on-pepsi-in-consumer-tribunal
"I think it might be a big thing for NLS, Bangalore but we have been doing such acts from the time we were in our 1st years..
so i dont think it need to published n such a manner that LI has done ."
"This is just sad. Just because an article is printed about NLSIU you cannot suddenly consider it as a bias! Especially when the folks here are willing to publish similar stories from every where.
If you want to be competitive why not focus on making yourselves look better instead of trying to put other people down?
Sick. "
"
NLSIU and Legally India has master servant relationship.
dare and publish it "
Go on Guys !
Next turn if of NALSAR I suppose. aahh!
or I must say name of the next show on Legally India " NALSAR and biased LI"
Keep Going!
Around 8 law schools participated in this.
The idea was to give the Indian teams at Vis a good practice and get inputs of judges on their speaking skills etc.
Unlike others, good colleges have bigger agendas than pulling others down.
We are all better than this. You have no idea how sour a picture you are drawing of your own law school, the more you attempt to pull any other particular law school down.
If you must, why don't you earn some coverage, and then complain about the lack of it?
1. the level of immaturity the 'law school students' of this country.
2. the difference between 'top' law schools and 'lesser mortals'
3. How in the world you people got into law schools in the first place. you might as well join some college for politics and social science
I have so far been a very objective observer with regard to the articles in LI and used to laugh at the gossips and fights in the comments, it was fun. but this is just utter stupidity. If NUJS or NALSAR or NLS is good and if people are jealous it is simply because the students of these colleges pride in being part of it. And it is that sense of pride which lets them start new projects/initiatives. And a law school is a place were you not only mug up sections or take part in moots etc it is were you nurture your ideas and create better opportunities for the students and the society as a whole. All world renowned universities and colleges are known foe the passion and drive of their students. If NUJS started such an initiative in collaboration with NALSAR hats off to their vision, leadership skills in successfully organizing it.
And if students from other law schools have issues with that, well either you guys mature over night or face the truth that it is the difference between your college and the top law schools as much as the difference between an IITian and other Engg colleges or IIM's from other management colleges.
So please GROW UP!
When NUJS has been ranked high, they say they are proactive.
when they are ranked lower than NLS & NALSAR, they say Outlook is baised...
I was involved in the organization of the pre-moot. I admit, it was no big deal organizing it. But the idea is, at a time when no one had organized one before us; at a time when three different entities in India considered it and shelved the plan; we were the only ones ready to take the plunge. With just two weeks in hand, we managed 8 teams, judges (almost all of whom have been to at least round of 32 in Vienna; some had honourable mentions, quarter-finals, etc.), and a sponsorship enough to give Rs. 1 lakh to the winning team. It may not be a big deal for eminent persons like you and your esteemed college. But for us lesser mortals, this is indeed commendable and a reason to celebrate.
Please let us know when you decide to stop cribbing and organize something productive. We will be glad to participate or render any support and put our hands together for you if the event is a success
If you read, and perhaps more importantly, understand #37, there is nothing in that comment that sounds like cribbing to me. The comment responds to #12 by saying that "legitimacy" cannot be conferred by inclusion in the list of pre-moots by Prof. Bergsten, as that list is neither exhaustive nor authoritative.
Of course, you had a lot of thoughts that were pent up inside you, and so took this opportunity to vent them uncontrollably. However, I believe that your "comment" was far from being "productive".
As for the pre-moot itself, I am quite happy with the idea. I was a speaker at the 2008 Vienna moot (and yes, Round of 32 hon. mention which you seem to attach great importance to) and I think India needs to have more premoots if we are to improve our performance. My only concern is with the legitimacy of the pre-moot, as I think the organizing school (or the school where the judges come from) should not participate in the event, let alone win it and pocket the sponsorship money.
Of course, you could say "but the judges are impartial and beyond reproach". But then my friend, the question is not whether there is real or actual bias, but whether there is "perceived bias." And really, consider this: Pre moot organized by NUJS, judged mainly by nujs alums etc., nujs wins, nujs gets sponsorship. Certainly a reasonable case for "perceived bias"
For some "productive" perspective in the context of international arbitration see Gus Van Harten, Perceived Bias in Investment Treaty Arbitration in The Backlash Against Investment Arbitration: Perceptions and Reality 433 (Michael Waibel et al. eds., 2010).
Don't "crib", be "productive" : )
In the preliminary round, none of the NUJS teams was judged by an NUJS student or alumnus, nor was the NAlSAR team judged by a NALSAR student.
In the semi-final round, due to paucity of judges, the semi-final between NALSAR and NUJS - V was judged by one NALSAR student and one NUJS student and one neutral judge.
The semi-final between HNLU and NUJS - East had one NUJS student on the bench, after confirming that the HNLU team had no objection to the same. Moreover, the result showed that the sole NUJS arbitrator dissented in favour of the HNLU team and the neutral arbitrators gave it in favour of NUJS.
I hope this helps with your 'bias' argument.
Also, if any of the critics on this post want an unbiased Indian pre-moot next year, please volunteer to organise or judge (if you are qualified) or both.
HOW ELSE CAN AN NUJS TEAM (OR ANY TEAM OTHER THAN MY OWN ESTEEMED COLLEGE) WIN ANY MOOT?
