LAW SCHOOL RANKINGS - CLAT & AILET 2015: A reader's attempt at a new & comprehensive law school ranking on 5 metrics
As there is lack of proper ranking for NLUs so I was trying to formulate a way to rank NLUs.
Also, I tried to rank NLUD with other NLUs.
I ranked colleges on five criteria:
1. Placements - I based my ranking on data available on different websites and number of job offers + LLM + People opting for competitive examinations for ranking colleges. Also, I tried to give preference to offers from top colleges and top tier law firms.
*First batch of NUSRL and NLUJAA have not passed out and this is the only reason for them being marked so low in this.
2. Faculty - I calculated by giving faculty points and then ranking the colleges. For allotting faculty points I gave 3 points to Professors, 2 to Associate Professors and 1 to Assistant Professor. I didn't mark Teaching Assistants and Visiting Professors as they I personally feel do not make a great mark in regular studies.
Faculty Profile is there on every college websites which have been updated by most of the colleges recently with the release of CLAT notification and the same I was tracking for some time and I used the same for marking Faulties.
3. Mooting - I based my mooting rank on average rank in last 5 Mooting Premier League.
*NLUD should actually be ranked after NLS and NLUJ if we go by their performance in all MPLSs except MPL 1 where they finished 16, the only time out of top 5.
*NUSRL and NLUJAA didn't feature first five MPL and so any one interested can look for their mooting performance in MPL 6.
4. Student Teacher Ratio - (Total no. of students to be admitted this year * 5)/ (Professor + Associate Professor + Assistant Professor)
5. Perception Rank - I calculated average of CLAT rank of Top 30 General category student opting for a particular NLU in first round of allotment. Although, I know a lot of students in lower ranked colleges opt for other colleges but the main purpose of this is perception of CLAT aspirants which I think is served by this method.
*NLUD is being marked equivalent to NLIU because it is between NLUD, NUJS,NLIU and NLUJ student make their choice, in case they have to.
Also, I marked colleges from 15 to 1 based on their ranking but gave double value to placements and CLAT Mean Rank as these two are the drawing features of good students from CLAT Applicants every year

Do you happen to have a more detailed breakdown of the methodology and data too? Would be interested in your faculty stats, student teacher ratio, recruitments and so on.
If you could share the data in a Google doc or something, it would be useful for others too to help interpret the results and perhaps finetune the methodology too...
Also, as you well know, and others might remark, non-CLAT schools are missing from this. Any ideas on how to integrate them into this (since we won't have CLAT rank as a metric).
You seem to have a misleading thought about NLIU, that's why yiu have ranked it below NLUJ and GNLU. clearly going by the mooting ranking NLIU has a better position than gnlu by a better margin in case you are inactive about it. Further, going by thr stats of this very website, NLIU had better placements than NLUJ in case you don't know. Even Kian should have made an effort tto write about this, rather than contradiciting his own stats!! Attacking the credibility. Further if the so called famous analyst of this post or REPORT wants ti judge law schools on faculty NLIU will be next after NALSAR and it is evident by the news of scams perpetrates by the administration!
First do some research and then come up with any report!
1. Firstly with regard to placements you can have a look at the stats of Kian yourself. I don't think I need to further address your query.
www.legallyindia.com/201410315253/Law-schools/law-schools-recruitment-power-rankings-2013-14
2. MPL Ranking of last five year of NLIU - 8, 9, 9, 22, 4
MPL Ranking of last five year of GNLU - 7, 7, 12, 9, 6
Again I mentioned the method I used so you can make calculations yourself.
3. See I did mention the formula I used to allot faculty rank and didn't question the quality of faculty. And dude you really have fewer Professors as compared to other NLUs. The stats are available on your and every other NLU and you can access and use my mechanism yourself to find if I am wrong or not.
Check the final rankings of MPL season 5, and then comment on it.
Further, check the legally india recruitment figures of the latest batch of 2015. I would request you to kindly SCROLL down the page and go for the final recruitment figures of the NLUs. With your poor and pathetic research, I'm sorry but you have a very doubtful career. Further, check out the no. of PROFESSORS of NLIU and check the no. of PROFESSORS of NUJS. This can be accessed on their respective websites. In case you don't know how to look for their website kindly type the respective name of the university and click on its website.
Sorry to say, but your research based report which is so called NEW is full of loopholes with a dark research only to make mockery of yourself.
NLIU 5 4 13 15+8+13=36
NUJS 4 3 25 12+6+25=43
if you still can't understand how I came up with this figure firstly read the whole post. Even after that you have some problem let it be.
look at our rank for last 5 years in MPL and then compare with us. average rank is what he is using and of any one year
Gnlu is right now languishing at rank 26 in the MPL while NLIU is sitting pretty at 4th. Considering our rigorous trimester system we do pretty well in mooting and yeah definitely doing better than GNLU.
Though would appreciate if the author could send or publish a copy of the raw data was used to calculate each of the faculty-related rankings... That would be quite useful and interesting and allow others to come to their own conclusions.
Thanks
Kian
@Ritwik try to work out for this
NUSRL 1 0 18
Provide Calculation for 18.
1 NLSIU Bangalore 295
2 NLU Jodhpur 257
3 NLU Delhi 225
4 NLIU Bhopal 145
5 Nalsar Hyderabad 117
6 GNLU Gandhinagar 111
7 NLU Orissa 110
8 NUJS Kolkata 104
9 HNLU Raipur 59
10 Nuals Kochi 44
11 RGNUL Patiala 29
12 CNLU Patna 8
I have few points of disagreement with this ranking.
1) the mooting points are aggregate of last 5 year MPL ranking and there are new NLUs who are doing very well from last 1-2 year. Thus this ranking seems to be unjust for dm
2) the statement that teaching assistant dont have any prominent role in studies is based on a very wrong presumption (at least for teacher student ratio it should be counted).
3) there are NLUs where even the first batch has not passed out, so assessing there placement and comparing with established ones is again misleading
4) 1st round allotments are highly dependent on prefrences and if the low scoring students are admitted in any NLU after 2nd or 3rd round counselling. So, why this analysis is not considering it while calculating mean score.
5) the prefrence for opting a NLU is also influenced by geographical, economical, social (college life) and other factors. These are not considered in this analysis
6) the data compiled for the no. Of faculties is also incorrect. For instance nusrl ranchi has many asst. Proffesors and it was only awarded with 4 points....
www.nusrlranchi.ac.in/?page_id=17
7) mooting per se is not a hall mark of a university's worth. ther are many other activites in law school that are equally imp. as of mooting
i think the research methodology needs some revison to make it more accurate and reliable.
indeed this methodology is not perfect and was just a bona fide attempt. I will answer all your queries in the order as asked
1. Yes, there are couple of colleges which didn't even make into MPL previously but I had to set some benchmark. Setting any random number of years would had antagonized more people so I preferred to take all the five editions for now.
2. I know in some colleges there are more teaching assistants than professors but basically as much I know the rule says, I don't know where but I heard from a secondary source that, teaching assistants are not allowed to take regular classes.
3. Again yes I did give them points lower than other NLUs on placements and there are again three NLUs which suffered from this. But you would acknowledge that placements is like one of the most important criteria for marking any college. Still I will add this point above so people would know the reason for low marks for these colleges.
4. Just for a simple reason that admission process goes on for couple of months and end up with filling of buffer seats stats of which are not available. I also mentioned the point about shifting and leaving of courses above.
5. It is but not when your college is doing great. I don't think a Ranchi guy would opt for NUSRL instead of NLS in any cases. These things come only when there is choice between two very similarly ranked colleges.
6. The points awarded for faculty in Table 1 is in comparison with those of other NLUs. The points you are talking about you can check in Table 2.
7. There are, only if we had anything similar to MPL in those activities.
@vinod damar from where did you get these mpl score with CNLU 8 points
1. NLSIU
2. NALSAR
3. NUJS
4. NLUD
5. NLIU
6. NLUJ
7. GNLU
8. SLS(PUNE)
9. HNLU
10.RMLNLU
11.CNLU
12.RGNUL
13.AIL(mohali)
14.NUALS
15.NLUO
16.NUSRL
17.DSNLU
18.NLUJAA
other point is that according to campus placement data by legally india CNLU is ahead of RMLNLU and HNLU?????
Like half of the students from HNLU are shown to be placed in some government authority of Chattisgarh government which is not open for law students of other colleges and also they are not actual given a regular position per se but a long term internship. So, stats can be deceiving.
So, don't jump into conclusion based on stats, also this is ranking of CLAT-based NLUs and I am trying to come up with a formula to incorporate other colleges.
Also, placements can be criteria for a person to opt a college but is not for everyone and there are other parameters which can't be overlooked if you want to invest your 5 years and your parent's money.
Recently there was news about their students cracking judiciary in large number
