Former Delhi High Court chief justice Dipak Misra and Kerala High Court chief justice Jasti Chelameswar have been sworn into the apex court today.

Both took their oath of office before Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia today, reported the Times of India. Misra became Delhi High Court chief justice on 24 May 2010, having started his career as an Orissa-based advocate in 1977, becoming additional judge of the Orissa High Court in 1996 and moving to Madhya Pradesh a year later.

Chalemeswar headed up the Kerala High Court as chief justice from 17 March 2010, starting his judicial career in 1997 in Andhra Pradesh (AP) in 1997 as an additional judge. He moved to Gauhati High Court as chief justice in 2007, having started his career as an advocate in AP in 1976.

Justice Katju retired last month following the induction of three new judges.

In September the number of pending cases rose by 400 with September itself creating a recorded deficit of 1,000 cases, according to Legally India’s Pendency Project.
