MahaGoa bar council now defunct for 7 months, Goa AG takes over till then

The term of all members of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa ended last week (2 December) with the Goa advocate general Atmaram Nadkarni having been appointed as chairman of the bar council.

The Herald Goa first reported his appointment and that a notification had been issued last Wednesday, with him commenting: “This is a rare distinction conferred on a Goan having regard to his professional standing.”

Legally India understands from sources that the chairmanship may rotate between Nadkarni and the attorney general for Maharashtra until a new council is elected by June or July of 2016.

Two former and outgoing members, Ashish Deshmukh and Jayant Bhayave, have been appointed as the interim committee to be in charge of the advocate verification process, which is set to continue until June of next year.
