Universal Legal advised Andhra Pradesh-based Rainbow Hospitals, in which the UK-government owned CDC and private equity investor Abraaj Group invested Rs 100 crore ($16m). Wadia Ghandy advised the CDC and Abraaj Group.

Universal Legal Chennai-based partner Kavitha Vijay and senior associate Sameena Chatrapathy acted for the 14-year old paediatric and maternity healthcare business in AP, which currently has 450 beds but will expand after this business.

Wadia Ghandy Bangalore partner Ankit Majumdar and senior associate Anubhav Agarwal acted for the investors. This was CDC’s first direct equity investment and it intends to invest $1bn in India in the financial services sector, healthcare, renewable energy, and consumer-related businesses, according to the ET.

Vaish Associates advised pre-school network Brainworks Learning Systems and its investor Kusumbala Investments in selling out for Rs 5 crore ($824,810) to pre-school network Tree House Education & Accessories. Tree House was advised by Wadia Ghandy.

Vaish Associates Mumbai corporate and banking partner Sandhya Iyer with senior associate Yatin Narang and associate Ishita Roy acted for Brainworks which, according to Business Standard, has 13 self-operated and 51 franchisee centres all over India.

Wadia Ghandy Ahmedabad partner Tanvish Bhatt with senior associate Shreya Desai acted for Tree House which will now have 450 centres across India, reported the paper.

Baring Private Equity Asia is set to take a minority stake in cement maker Lafarge India for $265m (Rs 1400 crore), with three domestic firms and two foreign law firms advising on the deal.

Lafarge was represented domestically by AZB & Partners on law and BMR & Associates on tax issues, with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton advising on non-Indian laws. AZB fielded Mumbai partner Essaji Vahanvati, BMR led with partner Kalpesh Desai. Clearys’ team consisted of Paris partner Pierre-Yves Chabert and associate Charles Masson.

Baring drafted in Wadia Ghandy Bangalore partner Ankit Majmudar and Allen & Overy (A&O) Paris partner Frederic Jungels.

Baring will subscribe to 200 million Euros of shares in a Lafarge subsidiary, giving the private equity house a 14 per cent stake, according to a press release from Cleary. The deal is slated as the largest in the private equity space in India so far this year, according to the WSJ.

Wadia Ghandy senior partner Djena Sunavala, who started her career at the firm more than 23 years ago, will exit from the firm in the end of March, according to legal website Bar & Bench.

She practiced corporate and commercial laws with a special focus on M&A, joint ventures and real estate transactions, but did not say what she would do after her resignation.

Wadia Ghandy partner Ashish Ahuja told Legally India: "We definitely wish her all the best in her endeavours. We will all miss her."

Desai & Dewanji Bombay partners Jai Diwanji and Ruzbeh Mistry, associate partner Sidhharth Mody, senior associate Shakti Singh Champawat and associate Karni Singh acted for the hotel developer, which is a joint venture between conglomerate Interglobe Enterprises and international hotel chain Accor.
