NLSIU-Bangalore-Library In today’s edition of Mint: The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore may face a funding gap of Rs. 2 crore this fiscal year after the Karnataka state government cut its grant by 50% from Rs. 4 crore last year. NLSIU was established in 1987 as the first of India’s flagship national law universities (NLUs).

Mooting Premier League 2011-12 - MPL3

NLU Delhi and NLSIU Bangalore were the only two teams that broke into the top 32 at the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot at Washington last month. While NLU Delhi won two honourable mentions and took home 30 points, NLSIU Bangalore won the third best memorandum award and bagged 20 points from this Tier 1 global championship MPL moot.

Nalsar Hyderabad became the first Indian team to win the international rounds of the Oxford Media Law moot by defeating the University of Technology, Sydney in the final rounds.

NLU Delhi finished as semi-finalist in the moot. NLSIU Bangalore won its eighth best memorandum award this season at the Tier 2 World Class MPL moot.

NUJS Kolkata defeated Nalsar Hyderabad in the final rounds of the NLU Antitrust moot. GNLU Gandhinagar and NLIU Bhopal finished semifinalists in the moot.

NLSIU Bangalore, Campus Law Centre Delhi, GLC Mumbai and Christ Law College Bangalore registered wins in the GNLU International Moot Court Competition (GIMC), Kerala Law Academy Moot, NUJS Herbert Smith National Corporate Law Moot Court Competition and the Surana Corporate Law Moot respectively.

Madhava Menon’s national law school experiment of 1986 may have failed to pull hundreds of Indian law schools out of mediocrity but it has brought newfound respect to legal education, reports Mint today. Critics complain that the national law schools have mostly benefited corporate law but this may not be their fault. While no NLS grads have so far made it to senior counsel rank, some are making their mark in litigation.
