Bombay high court

Six new senior advocates were designated in the Jharkhand high court, including Jharkhand bar council chairman Rajiv Ranjan, on 29 April.

The other five newly designated seniors in the high court are Birendra Kumar Poddar, Raj Nandan Sahay, Anil Kumar, Sanjiv Kumar and Ajit Kumar, according to a notification on the high court’s website.

The Bombay high court also had a round on 8 May in which seven new seniors were designated.

Bombay high court advocate Ameya Gokhale, currently in the chambers of Pradeep Sancheti, is due to join the new Mumbai office of Amarchand Mangaldas Delhi managing partner Shardul Shroff as a partner, reported the Economic Times.

Gokhale left Khaitan & Co as a principal associate in August 2013, having joined in 2008 from an LLM at George Washington University Law School and two years at Amarchand where began his career after graduating from NLSIU Bangalore in 2005.

The largest Indian law firm break-up ever is now official, after the Bombay high court today blessed the arbitral award arrived at after nearly six months of mediation between Amarchand Mangaldas Suresh A Shroff & Co managing partners and brothers, Cyril and Shardul Shroff.

Advocate Aditya Barthakur has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Bombay high court challenging the criminalisation of cannabis under Indian law, based on the fact that none of six government organs he queried had any idea about how the herb is harmful to the human body.

"The number of posts for judges in the Bombay high court has been increased from the current 75 to 94, announced chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in the legislative assembly on Friday. However, of the 75 existing posts, ten are vacant. So in effect there are only 65 judges,” reported the Times of India.

The Department of Justice in the law ministry has begun drafting a bill to rename the Bombay and Madras high courts to Mumbai and Chennai high courts, respectively, reported the PTI.

The two high courts were established under the Indian High Court Act, 1861 alongside the Calcutta high court, and have so far resisted attempts to be renamed in line with their hosting cities.
