Sponsored post: Is the Bar Exam here to stay? As the third All India Bar Exam is around the corner, it started to look like the bar exam is outliving the fervent opposition led by disgruntled law students, until on Christmas eve the Calcutta High Court ordered a stay on publishing of results of the bar exam [Indian Express], while allowing the exam to take place. Not many of the 22,000 odd exam takers will be counting on the exam being scrapped though, especially since they have to write the paper on 8 January anyway.
While law graduates have been allowed to start practicing provisionally before passing the bar exam, continuation of practice in the courts depends on passing the exam eventually. The Bar Council has clarified that it is not essential for those practicing as in-house counsels or transactional lawyers to pass the exam, but in practice, nonetheless, most firms are insisting that the new joinees to the firm sits for and clears the exam.
Several law firms have made it a condition for ending probation period - those who does not pass the exam will remain on probation longer. Many firms have even allowed associates to take two days off to take the exam. Even some of the 2011 graduates who joined London law firms are coming back to take the Bar Exam.
The Bar Exam claims to test the law graduates on their analytical ability and knowledge of basic law. But the last two versions of the exam saw almost one third of the examinees fail the exam, although many students reported the paper to be very easy.
“The reason is very obvious,” said BarHacker co-founder Ramanuj Mukherjee. “The paper is very easy from an academic point of view in the sense that questions are not difficult. Also, people have the benefit of looking up books while answering. Still, a very large number of law students have no experience of taking an open book multiple choice exam, plus they do not how they can prepare for an exam in which different subjects are tested.”
According to BarHacker, the best way to prepare is to familiarise oneself with the study material provided by the Bar Council - since most of the questions are directly framed from this material. “Also, it really helps if you can practice some multiple choice questions - preferably in a mock test format. Try looking up answers from the material as you try to solve questions under time-constraint, and you'll know exactly what to expect in the bar Exam.”
BarHacker, which launched in 2010 before the first Bar Exam took place, boasts a 100% pass rate to date in the first two exams. The founders are so confident about the crash course that they are offering a full money-back guarantee for the third time to any subscriber who does not pass despite taking the course.
What is the secret behind the success of BarHacker? “I think the mock exams were excellent, they predicted almost all the questions which could have come in the exam,” said Manisha Chaudhary who scored 83 in first the bar exam.
The BarHacker course depends on the following ingredients to train its students:
- Online mock tests with electronic countdown of time - which very closely resemble a real bar exam paper
- Strategy Videos which describes sneaky methods to identify the easiest questions from the paper, and how to look up answers from the study material in seconds
- A Magical Index of the Bar Council Study Material - makes it very easy to find any answer
- A practice book (available only in hard copy) - to practice questions subject-wise, works best when used as a study companion along with the material provided by the Bar Council of India
The BarHacker course is available in two packages:
BarHacker All-out Crash Course (Recommended for those who need to brush up their knowledge of law and needs a lot of practice in order to pass)Mock tests + Indexes + videos + practice book

It is only a general idea of the subject that one needs to have. You are not expected to be a parrot here. You only need layman smartness in understanding the questions and a gentle reading of the modules beforehand.
A Mock-exam is a pure mockery of one's lack of awareness in understanding the pattern of the exam, which I believe is a general bar setter of the level of knowledge that any person joining the profession must possess.
