Four Indian teams have made it into the last 64 out of 342 teams at the Willem C Vis Moot in Vienna, according to an update on its Facebook page.
On Tuesday (yesterday) at 8pm (Vienna time - around 11pm India time):
- JGLS Sonepat faced off against FGV Rio Law School, and
- NLIU Bhopal mooted against Federal University of Parana
while at 8am on Wednesday (today - around 1130am India time):
- NLSIU Bangalore faces Duke University, and
- NLU Delhi will moot against the University of Maastricht Team.
MPL consequences: Not likely to be dramatic at the top, but interesting in mid-field
While India’s representation so far is great news all around, at least for the MPL it means that the top of the leaderboard, which is occupied by GNLU Gandhinagar, Nalsar Hyderabad, NUJS Kolkata and Symbiosis Pune (in that order), is unlikely to change significantly amongst each other (and giving Nalsar at Stetson a chance of taking over the lead from GNLU, with only 14 points currently separating them).
It also gives an opportunity for NLU Delhi - currently at 95 points in fifth place - to climb the ranks (though catching up with first-ranked GNLU at 174 points will be very tough with just this one moot).
NLSIU Bangalore and NLIU Bhopal are currently respectively in 8th and 9th place in the MPL rankings at 82 and 75 points, while JGLS has not had a great season this time, in 19th position with 26 points.
Update 12 April 2017, 10:26
NLIU Bhopal and JGLS Sonepat are both through to the round of 32, according to Vis’ Twitter feed.
Results from the other two teams in the last 64, who are having their rounds very shortly, to be updated.
Jindal will face University of Zurich in the next round of 32, beginning at 11am Vienna time (2:30pm India time), with NLIU up against Monash University at the same time.
Update 15:15: NLSIU and NLU Delhi are out
NLSIU and NLU Delhi did not make it to the last 32, unfortunately.
Update 19:25: NLIU out in round of last 16
JGLS Sonepat and NLIU Bhopal are through to the octa-finals of the Vis Vienna moot, according to the competition’s Twitter page.
JGLS was up against Institute d’Etudes Politique de Paris, while NLIU faced Mackenzie Presbyterian University.
However, according to a video posted up by Vis on its Facebook, NLIU lost its match by 3 votes to nil.
JGLS’ fate to be confirmed...
19:31: JGLS rounds are still ongoing...
We will post an update when we get it.
==19:40: Vis interim MPL standings + Jessup
After the Vis so far, NLIU Bhopal with octa-finalist points of at least 15, will be on at least 90 points in the MPL 7, tied in seventh place with NLU Jodhpur.
NLSIU Bangalore would move into ninth position (its lowest ever ranking after Vis Vienna in any MPL season to date).
JGLS, no matter what happens, will be winning at least 15 points from Vis Vienna, if not more.
Other honourable mentions and citations have obviously not yet been included.
Meanwhile, the Jessup ‘world cup of mooting’ moot - where Nalsar Hyderabad, Symbiosis Pune, NLU Orissa and NLIU Bhopal are representing - is having its 4th preliminary rounds at the moment, with breaks due to be announced in 12-odd hours or so.
We’ll keep you posted.
21:13: JGLS Sonepat is through to the quarter finals
According to Vis quarter final match-ups, Jindal began facing Cambridge University at 17:30 (9pm India time).
23:22: Jindal defeats Cambridge into semi-finals
JGLS Sonepat has won against Cambridge University’s team 3-0, and will now move into the semi-finals to face Columbia.
13 April 2017, 09:51: Jessup breaks are out, Vis Jindal semis about to start
Good morning everyone, we’re back with our live updates from the world’s two biggest moots.
The big breaking fantastic news: Jessup breaks of the last 32 teams are out, and, amazingly, a massive three Indian teams have broken through: Nalsar Hyderabad, NLIU Bhopal, and NLU Orissa.
We’ll update more on their progress as we find out.
Meanwhile, at Vis Vienna, Jindal’s semi-final match-up against Columbia University, before arbitrators Datuk Professor Sundra Rajoo, Ms Rashda Rana and Dr Philipp Habegger, is scheduled for 9am Vienna time today (1230pm India time).
Let’s hope that JGLS haven’t lost their mojo today after (hopefully) a good night’s sleep following yesterday’s punishing knock-out mooting schedule at Vis!
The other semis are between the University of Ottawa and the University of Montevideo.
10:03: Incredible India performance so far
No other country has seen as many teams make it to the 1/16th finals of the last 32, including the UK and the US (2 of their teams each broke into the last 32), despite fielding many more teams to the competition than India.
BTW, it needs to be said: Jessup deserves huge points for the amazing design work on its evocative poster this year.
The case looks super interesting. Read the compromis of the “case concerning the Sisters of the Sun” here, if interested.
16:00: India makes it to Vis finals!
Yes, JGLS Sonepat has won against Columbia to make it to the Vis Vienna final round. Congratulations and much applause!
JGLS will face the University of Ottawa in the finals!
WILLEM C. VIS MOOT tweeted:
The following teams will compete in the finals of the #24thVisMoot University of Ottawa v O.P. Jindal Global University
— WILLEM C. VIS MOOT (@VisMootVienna) Thu, 13 Apr 2017, 15:44
17:38: The JGLS vs Ottawa Vis Vienna finals are going on right now and look grand...
20:18: Sadly, Ottawa has won the Vis finals but...
massive congratulations are in order for JGLS Sonepat for coming in second at one of the toughest moots in the world!
14 April 2017, 11:05: NLIU Bhopal and NLU Orissa barge into quarter finals of Jessup!
NLIU Bhopal and NLU Orissa have made it to the last 8 at Jessup, after a successful round of the last 16.
The Nalsar team unfortunately did not make it out of the stage of the last 32.
The quarter finals are due to take place this morning (US time), so it’ll be some time this evening or late at night that we’ll be expecting updates...
15 April 2017, 00:40: NLUO Cuttack is in the Jessup finals!!!
Yes, sorry, we’re slightly late here on our live blog (do follow our MPL Facebook page, which had the more rapid update this time), but better late than never: NLUO Cuttack has made it to the Jessup World Cup of Frigging Mooting semi finals!
The last time India went to the semis at Jessup was NLSIU in 2013 and before that Nalsar in 2010. Great stuff.
NLUO is up against Norman Manley Law School, Jamaica. NLIU unfortunately did not make it out of the quarters, but a round of applause is also due for its performance!
Anyway, at this point we’ve all got our fingers crossed for NLUO on the world stage...
The other semi-finalist teams are from Australia and Canada.
01:33: Breaking news: NLUO finishes Jessup run in semi finals
Alas, an India finals was not meant to be this year, though NLUO came damn close.
We are just getting word that NLUO Cuttack lost its semi-finals to Norman Manley Law School of Jamaica.
The other semis are still ongoing.
Nevertheless, with a small tear in our eye, a massive congratulations to NLUO for this amazing run, as well as to NLIU, Nalsar and Symbi for generally kicking ass at Jessup this year for India. Well done all!
01:47: The other non-Indian Jessup finalist - Australia, which beat Ontario in the second semi-finals
So, the non-Indian final at Jessup will be Australia vs Jamaica...
01:59: We’ve got in touch with the NLUO team...
which consists of Aman Pandey, Ranjeev Khatana, Aditya Laddha and Debayan Gupta. They’re probably exhausted and swamped by congratulatory WhatsApp messages :) But have asked them for some thoughts and will share here if they manage to get back.
FYI: if you want to watch the Jessup finals, they are starting around 11:30pm Indian time broadcast live on this URL.
17 April 2017: 10:50 Sydney law school has won in the finals
According to the Jessup Facebook:
ILSA announced the topics for the 2018 Jessup Competition: the validity of interstate arbital awards, the capture of a marine vessel, the breach of nuclear disarmament obligations, and the conduct of naval warfare.
That’s it for now from the Vis and Jessup liveblog, thanks for following. Once we have gathered all the citations and honourable mentions, we will do a separate story shortly.

Thanks. :)
Hopefully Aditya's good work at NLUO finds able successors.
We're yet to fully confirm NLIU and NLUO - rumour is that NLUO is through to the last 16, but we are still looking for confirmation from someone who's there...
"How does it feeel?" :D
Also, more generally, Bangalore is still being used by 90% of Bengalurus, no?
If it NUJS is NUJS, Kolkata and NLSIU is NLSIU, Bengaluru (which is the appropriate way), NLUO (please note that it's not NLU Odisha) shall be NLUO, Cuttack. If in doubt, jus refer to clat.ac.in
Thanks!
Still not entirely sure what to call NLU Maharashtra for instance, and how to distinguish them, since there are so many of them...
We'll try to use NLUO Cuttack if possible, though NLU Odisha/Orissa somehow rolls off the tongue better, no?
Also, I learned something today. "Juridical science" is actually a real thing: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_of_Juridical_Science
I always assumed it was kinda something NUJS founders had made up only :)
Some of the Vis points are already included there, taking JGLS to 11th place and NLU Delhi to 5th...
Just kidding, that's a bit facetious. But yes, at the end of the day, these are individual performances by very talented and dedicated individual students, who would have had some institutional support, which suggests that the administration is not completely ignorant of students and what they want and like.
But, success at mooting does not necessarily mean that you're getting a great legal education (though those might coincide sometimes).
Though, success at mooting suggests that at least some students in a college are smart and articulate and ambitious, which is one ingredient that every college must have in order to provide a good legal education.
But who was undermining NLUO? Why so defensive?
- Pround NLIUite
University of Western Ontario v. Australia
Jamiaca v. India (which one?)
Hope you go on to join the club of two (to reach the finals, with NLSIU).
Perhaps, you are not aware of faculty in NLUO, Cuttack. Yes. You are right, am a faculty typing this (jus for the sake of disclosure of interest that we learn)! Not here to argue that every member of faculty is brilliant. But to generalise NLUO to have limited faculty is not correct. Visit the campus once, pl. You may change your opinion of limited infra too. Thanks.
Do also follow our MPL Facebook page at facebook.com/mooting.in for sometimes even speedier updates than our liveblog. :)
Anyway, all our thoughts are with you NLUO!

On a side note - amazing run by NLUO! Legends!
Citations received by JGLS and NLS are already up on the Live MPL Table-https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1A43g_rpB76FoNwld29MrMvjceZr9jkSbxF8CumCmy6s/pubhtml?gid=0&single=true
The Vienna-Pace Website is yet to upload the exhaustive list of citations and awards for the 2017 edition. Meanwhile, we have reached out to the MCCs of some universities which proceeded to the advanced rounds. Very soon a story will be up, covering Vienna and Nani Palkhivala followed by Jessup.
Seriously though, the MPL is and always from its inception been about more than just a handful of world class moots.
It's about assessing the overall mooting performance of a college across the board, not just about who the top 10 best mooters are in each college.
And if you still so strongly disagree and are saddened by another college having performed really well at domestic moots this year, then you should have really complained about the MPL philosophy at any time in the last 7 years or so, after the MPL was first started up with exactly the same philosophy...
Please LI, refrain from publishing such comments which you know to be of a malafide nature and based on false information.
At the end of the day, anyone with the slightest understanding will understand that LI has no influence on how well one college or another performs in the MPL, since the rules are known beforehand and are the same for everyone, and applied without any discretion on our part.
