NUJS Kolkata and RMLNLU Lucknow finished semifinalists in the moot.
The GNLU team consisted of Aonkan Ghosh, Kunal Chaturvedi, Shreya Ramakrishnan and Shashank Shekhar.
Speaker Ghosh told Legally India that the team had had a brilliant experience. “This was one of the few moots in India which has a different genre of mooting, if I may say so. The format was new to us as we were simulating a trial. An hour before the oral rounds, we were given time to coach our witnesses and tell them how to respond during the cross-examination.
“The oral rounds covered every aspect of a trial – we had an opening statement, examination and cross-examination of witnesses by the prosecution and the defense and lastly there was the closing statement.”
He also said that procedural law played a very vital role in the moot. “Usually, we only research on substantive law for moots, but procedural law was equally important in this moot. The judging was good and we had intense competition. The final round against NLU Jodhpur was very close,” he said.
The moot, organised by Surana & Surana International Attorneys in collaboration with University Institute of Legal Studies, Chandigarh, was conceived to promote trial advocacy skills.
Student organiser Rashi Ahluwalia from UILS Chandigarh said that the moot went very well. “We had four sitting high court judges in the final rounds and many other young advocates judging the preliminary rounds. The competition was good. Out of the twelve teams that participated in the moot, there were around five teams which were really good. Even in the final rounds, the judges noted that it was very close”.
The problem was based on a fact situation similar to the Bhopal gas tragedy with some modifications such as the use of information technology law.
