NUJS Kolkata has received an internal complaint of sexual harassment from one of its vice chancellor’s (VC) staff members, against a senior employee in the registrar’s department, reports the Times of India.

The victim has reportedly alleged that she was receiving “lewd emails and objectionable proposals” from the accused for over a year, had complained to the administration and no action was taken, and has now filed a written complaint to the VC on the advice of the registrar to whom she had verbally complained.

NUJS has set up a committee comprising two senior faculty members, a senior non-teaching staff, and a teacher from Jadavpur University English department, to investigate the complaint. The accused has been suspended.

The accused told the paper yesterday that he had already resigned, and NUJS VC Ishwara Bhatt confirmed that he had received a call from the accused stating this intent, though the registrar said that he had received no resignation from the accused yet.

NUJS registrar Surajit Mukhopadhyay said:

“[…]This is the first time that such a controversy has happened in the university and we have taken very serious note of the matter. If the accused is proved guilty, strictest action according to the law of the land will be taken.”

Bhatt told the Times that NUJS would do everything to “uphold the dignity” of the complainant.

The 21-year old NLSIU Bangalore student who was allegedly raped near the law school’s campus by eight men in October has discontinued her studies at NLSIU and returned to her native city, according to the New Indian Express.

Dr H Chandrashekar, the Bangalore Medical College’s head of department of psychiatry, was treating her. He told the paper that she had very severe trauma and post traumatic stress disorder and could also have been “under pressure from parents or peers to discontinue and go back”.

The paper also reported that Judge K B Sangannanavar at the Additional City Civil & Sessions Court has begun trying the six accused — Ramu, Doddairayya, Shivanna, Maddura, Yeleyayya and Irayya of Ramangaram and Mattaradodigudda on Wednesday, exactly six months after the incident. Nalsar Hyderabad relaxed its attendance requirement from 95 per cent to 75 per cent semester and reduced the number of academic research papers to be written by students per semester from five to one, according to The Hindu.

The law school has also introduced the “restorative justice system” on campus; e.g., students found guilty of cheating will be penalised by working in its library. The administration plans to also take “steps” like introducing film festivals on campus.

Nalsar Vice chancellor Faizan Mustafa told The Hindu:

“We are hoping that our steps to make academic calendar of the student less stressful are implemented by other universities… Our students have to write only one academic research paper and the remaining four papers can be based on their personal interests such as music, movies, book review, etc”

Nalsar had held a workshop in April on “Restorative Justice Procedures in the Higher Education Institutions to overcome the problem of Students' Suicides on University Campuses”. On 30 April the Andhra Pradesh high court appointed Mustafa and Nalsar faculty member Prof Martin Price to the committee to examine the issue of student suicides on campus.
