Wadia Ghandy restarts expansion with new site in Chennai

Wadia Ghandy & Co will open up a new office in Chennai within a month, marking the firm's recovery since the Mumbai terror attacks last November when one of its partners was killed.

The Chennai office will be a green fields operation started by Mumbai partner Shona Malvi, who will hope to recruit four lateral associates for the new office.

The firm is finalising the lease on office space in the centre of Chennai on
Nungambakkam High Road, which will have a total capacity for 15 staff.

Wadia Ghandy partner Ashish Ahuja said: "You find a lot of Chennai clients who come to Bombay, they keep telling us they have a big lack of corporate counsel and people who can generally advise in Chennai."

He added that the office would be handling all types of work, ranging from conveyancing to corporate commercial.

Wadia Ghandy currently has offices in Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore, and it opened up its Ahmedabad office in Gujarat around 18 months ago, where around seven lawyers are now based.

The firm has a total of 13 partners.

One of Wadia Ghandy's star partners Anand Bhatt was shot dead on the roof of the Oberoi Hotel in November 2008's Mumbai terrorist attacks.

Ahuja said that Bhatt's death has had a big impact on Wadia Ghandy but he added that the firm had no plans to hire any lateral partners at present.
