Wadia Ghandy & Co has opened its Chennai office with its local managing partner reporting a buoyant and untapped market.
Mumbai partner Shona Malvi has now recruited two associates and leased 1,000 square foot of office in the business district on Nungambakkam High Road.
Malvi said: "It's quite exciting. I wasn't expecting it but there's already work coming in and clients have started visiting the office."
She said that she felt positively about the Chennai market, adding: "I don't think there are too many national law firms here and from that perspective it's a good market. It's not very well tapped."
However, she added that the fee structure in Chennai was much lower than in Mumbai.
The Chennai office's two associate hires consist of two recent law school graduates, one of whom also has an LLM degree.
Malvi said that within the next two months she would decide whether additional fee-earner capacity would be required.
The office will be trying to attract both local clients, as well current clients with operations in Chennai. It will focus on corporate, banking and finance law.
Legally India first reported on Wadia Ghandy's plans to open in Chennai two months ago.

that way, you also ensure that you attract only local talent and not persons who are from out of chennai.
but good the SM. From starting as a real estate lawyer (as i have heard) to heading an office for corporate, banking and finance work.
