Foreign firm M&A league table: US firms again grab the biggest share, Kirkland, Slaughters top

Kirkland & Ellis and Slaughter & May acted on the biggest Indian M&A transactions among 14 foreign law firms that each advised on more than $1bn worth of Indian M&A deals this quarter.

Of those 14, five are UK-headquartered, two are Singapore-headquartered and the remaining seven are US-headquartered firms. Additionally, two US firms under the billion dollar deals mark also made it to the list of top firms.

Both Kirkland and Slaughters jumped billions of dollars since last quarter, through only scored one additional reported deal since Q2. Both firms had acted, lately, on the Reliance-Aircel mega merger of unreported deal value.

Kirkland advised on three transactions worth $8.8bn and Slaughter & May advised on four transactions worth $7.8bn in Q3.

By volume: White & Case trumped DLA Piper and Shearman & Sterling. Shearman had the largest number of recorded Indian M&A deals in the first six months of 2016, but White & Case and DLA Piper with six trnasactions each are now at the top.

They are followed by Slaughter & May, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Latham & Watkins and Allen & Overy each of which worked on four transactions.

By value: Not just Kirkland and Slaughter, but even Davis Polk & Wardwell, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett trumped Q2 leader Latham & Watkins. White & Case, Linklaters, Troutman Sanders, Weil Gotshal & Manges, Shearman & Sterling and Herbert Smith Freehills each advised on more than $1bn worth of Indian mergers and acquisitions.

Singapore-headquartered Wong Partnership rose above the other Singapore firm on the list Allen & Gledhill since Q2. US firms Dechert and Goodwin Procter, alongside Allen & Gledhill, were the only firms on the list with less than $1bn of transactions.
