Linklaters India head Sandeep Katwala has been appointed as Emerging Europe, Middle East and Africa (EEMEA) regional managing partner while continuing in his role as India head.
Katwala (pictured) will take up the role from 1 May 2010, succeeding Stuart Salt who was appointed Asia managing partner at the start of this year.
The firm wrote in a press release that Katwala would continue to head up the India practice and work with India-related clients.
Katwala became a Linklaters partner in 2000 and inherited the India practice from previous India head Nikhil Mehta who had left to join Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in 2002.
Katwala specialises in corporate and M&A, as well as some infrastructure work.
Linklaters managing partner Simon Davies said in a statement: "The CEE, Middle East, Russia/CIS and Africa are important and dynamic markets. Furthermore, we are seeing increasing cross-border activity between the EEMEA region and Asia (including India).
"Sandeep’s broad experience in Asia, including his success in building our India practice, make him ideally suited to this key leadership role."
Linklaters has a best friends relationship with Indian firm Talwar Thakore & Associates (TTA).
In November 2009, two Linklaters partners joined TTA as equity partners.

Best friend.
Katwala is 100% British. He just happens to be of Indian descent and does work related to India. Period.
If he's "Indian" then so is Bobby Jindal
The above is something much more important vis a vis something dynamic being done by a lawyer of Indian descent overseas such as Sandeep.
The entire world peace depends on this. Come on yaar, get your facts right and then shower praises.
or is it more shallow and your comments merely reflect your professional insecurity?
These people are not "Indian" and we should really quit trying to say their achievements are those of Indians or show the potential Indians hold... Their life experiences and what they achieved came primarly out of their time abroad and not due to their Indian origin. What they have achieved is remarkable - no doubt about that - but it would have very little with them being Indian, coz they really are not - not just as a matter of the passport they carry but also the way they think and uproach issues due their time aborad....
Probably, inspired by your bureaucratic government, you will say that since Al Pacino does not have a PIO (Person of Italian Origin) Card so it cant be said that he has been claimed by the Italians. How typical of of this trait of making statements without doing any research (or probably even visitng Italy).
Stop wasting your precious billable time on this debate, your owner - partners will not give you credit for defending theri fiefdoms... (unless you are lucky and have become free for the weekend, in which case have a good weekend)
I work at a good firm abroad and have time and access to the internet at work and more than reasonable hours. My hours are up and billing is no issue (the firm has no billable min) and I work hard. So thanks for your concern.
