Khaitan & Co's Mumbai office is moving from the Ballard Estate area to Lower Parel, where it has taken a lease of a large space allowing it to double in size in future.
Mumbai partner Rabindra Jhunjhunwala said: "We are moving to a swanky 32,000 square feet fancy building called One Indiabulls Centre."
Khaitan & Co Mumbai, despite having only been founded in 2001, is by far the firm's largest office with around 100 lawyers. New Delhi is around 40 lawyers strong by comparison.
The new office space will have a capacity of up to 350 total lawyers and support staff, said Jhunjhunwala, adding that the firm would not need the entire space immediately.
On 1 November Khaitan & Co will move to its new office in the Lower Parel region, which is very close to Amarchand Mangaldas' Peninsula Towers office and not far from Trilegal's office in nearby Worli.
The majority of other major Mumbai firms are still based further South around Nariman Point, Fort or Ballard Estate, where Khaitan & Co was formerly located at Meher Chambers on R K Marg.
"We could have gotten space that side of town as well," insisted Jhunjhunwala, "but the idea was to move into one floor – the place we are currently in we have broken up offices and offices across the road [from each other]. Here we will be on one floor, one location, one office."
"It's a statement which we make - the first time you walk in you feel like you're in [London's new business district] Canary Wharf."

I believe Trilegal already has an office in Delhi as well as Bangalore.
Must feel sorry for the firms using moving in to bigger premises as a pretext to deny their associates either a good bonus or a raise!
Sad, if associates have to bear the costs of firms' vaulting ambitions! Doubly sad, as cerebral faculties maketh a firm more than anything else!
May sanity prevail!
Which are these firms?
'Moving' (in the context used in #3's post) means 'to start off' - unless used in a sentence in a manner as used in the title of this news item (Khaitan ... Mumbai office moves north) it connotes that (Trilegal) is about to start off in Delhi and Bangalore. Hence, the sentence could have been worded better e.g. Trilegal's Delhi and Bangalore offices are moving ... - to avoid confusion as to the intended meaning.
Before expressing doubts about one's cognitive ability, do refer a good dictionary.
Look at Infosys, the IT behemoth, which has grown its real estate portfolio to obscene levels. In an around Bangalore, it is one of the biggest landlords! Do you truly believe they need all that land?

Associate is fickle-minded, real estate is not. At least that's what partners seem to be thinking.
When foreign firms start coming in, fickle associate will be lost. But at least firms can tout the infrastructure facilities they are creating (with other essential wares) should sell-out be the only end-game.
Thinking only about raises or bonuses is too shallow. If one believes in his organisation (and just not money) then he should stand by its firm during such growth period. Logic is simple - if the firm grows then the benefit will come to you as well, may be a year or two later.
Hard to find saints like you. Do you work from, or sit in, the himalayas.
Why do you buy vegetables with - home minted coins?
What do fill your car tank with - water?
Surprisingly, the best things in world are free, but everything else has a damn cost!
Mr. 16 you will slowly learn this lesson well in life. Mr. 16, may be you are young, try panning out your life a few years later when you have a kids is ready to go to school and you realise how expensive the schools are.
Will you not feel cheated if you seen partners walking out with the booty end of every year and doling out empty appreciation and thank yous to you.
I do appreciate your thoughts. We should work out a deal - We will grow together. I will keep the money and let you keep growth and satisfaction! Trust you will be satiated then.
