Dua-breakaway Tatva sets off Mumbai expansion with 10th partner from former firm

Dua Associates Mumbai partner Mahernosh Humranwala and his team are on notice to join Tatva Legal next month and will head up the half-year-old firm's Mumbai growth efforts, which was formed by 50 former Dua lawyers.

Real estate and litigation partner Humranwala will join Tatva Legal with his core team, which is understood to consist of around four to five associates.

The start-up's Mumbai office has so far consisted of two former Dua lawyers and a number of lateral associates who had been operating without a fixed office space.

Humranwala will be the start-up's first Mumbai-based partner and will take the size of the office to around 12 lawyers, said Tatva Legal co-founding partner Shishir Sharma. It is understood the firm is currently considering office space options in the city.

As reported by Legally India in January, Tatva was aiming for a Mumbai presence of 15 lawyers within six months.

Sharma said: "We are looking at expanding the Bombay office and I think this is a step in the right direction.

"Clearly there will be further focus in the next months to expand that practice by bringing more partners on board – [Mumbai] is a very large practice for us not to focus on."

Humranwala had been with Dua Associates for five years focusing on litigation and real estate, before which he was running his own independent practice.

He graduated with an LLB from Government Law College (GLC) Bombay in 1987 after completing a BSc in bio-chemistry and a post graduate diploma in management.

Humranwala declined to comment when contacted by Legally India.

Dua Associates confirmed in a statement: "Mahernosh Humranwala, partner in the Mumbai office will be leaving the firm during the month of July."

Dua Associates said in a statement that in the last three months it had hired "around 20 professionals" including three lateral partners. The firm also added that it had promoted two "managers" as partners and had promoted three junior partners to its senior partnership.

Dua Associates declined to confirm the names of the new joiners and promoted partners.

It is understood that Dua Associates will only have one partner remaining in its Mumbai office after Humranwala's departure.

The firm was hit by the departure of 50 Dua lawyers, including nine partners, who started up Tatva Legal at the start of this year.

Tatva began with a total of 60 lawyers but now stood 70-lawyers-strong, not counting Humranwala and his team, said Sharma.
