BMR Legal announced the induction of Kaushik Mukherjee, who was earlier a partner at J Sagar & Associates as the second partner based out of the firm’s Mumbai office.
He is a public M&A and capital markets lawyer, and BMR seeks to expand into the capital markets domain with him, according to its press release.
Mukherjee is a 2003 law graduate who had worked with White and Case and AZB & Partners earlier. He was made partner at JSA in 2013.
He had denied in September that he had accepted an offer from BMR as he was in talks with several firms at the time.
BMR managing partner Mukesh Butani stated in a press release that the firm was “confident that his presence will lend impetus to the firm’s goal to be amongst the leading transaction advisory law firms”.
BMR partner Amit Khansaheb added: “The firm has excelled over the past few years in the area of corporate M&A and private equity and Kaushik’s entry will further strengthen our ability to provide more wide ranging services to clients.”
BMR was founded in 2010 and now has a strength of 50 lawyers and 6 partners.

But to answer your question, yes, typically recruiters will check in with people they know who have worked with you, for their feedback prior to hiring. How much weight they give to this feedback will vary from lawyer to lawyer.
